Interesting. I made other map, pretty simple:

I'm also working on nationwide map that displays the average income by county; the progress can be viewed here:

The density might also be more informative at the county level. For instance, in IL the seven counties in the Chicago area make up 7% of the state area but together have a population density twice that of NJ. The remainder of the state would have a pop density about the same as neighboring MO.

I never realized how wealthy of an area the Minneapolis metro area is. The whole subruban area forms a ring of over $60,000 incomes around the city.

It appears that MN is in third place for the number of counties with median income over 60K. They have 7 behind VA 10 and MD 9.
