Austria has an extremely controversial singer this year (well, more controversial abroad really than domestically), with drag artist Conchita Wurst:

The song ("Rise like a Phoenix") is getting, unsurprisingly, pretty mixed reviews on YouTube and many hostile comments ... Tongue

...

Well, I don't really have a problem with it - but I wonder how many points we'll get from the homophobic Eastern European countries this year ... Wink

I was rooting for Latvia. Scumbag judges only like generic pop, it seems. Sad

Italy has a good song too.

I don't know how you can go on stage in that attire without any shame.

It's called "self confidence" ...

Damn the man. It should have been a Dutch victory Sad

Netherlands had a good Johnny Cash/June Carter-like country-song that came out of nowhere, with a solid performance.

I would have not been all too shocked if they won.

Here you can watch the voting from the Austrian (winner) perspective and a performance of Emmelie de Forest (Only Teardrops) before that:

The song contest is sooo "Glee" and "High School Musical"-like ... Tongue

The ORF also had a 40 minute "personal look" into Tom Neuwirth/Conchita's life incl. her parents.

http://tvthek.orf.at/topic/Eurovision-Song-Contest-2014/7875346/Conchita-einfach-persoenlich/7899365

This is especially funny, because on Wikipedia people ask if Conchita is of Turkish origin because of her looks.

The parents are in fact like 100% Austrian and own a restaurant in a town of 3500 people in Upper Styria.

As you may know, the points awarded from each country in the voting are based 50-50 on the TV audience vote and Jury vote in each country.

This is the official list of how each country voted, split by TV audience, jury and combined:

http://download.krone.at/esc.pdf

For example, the German TV voters gave Conchita 12 points - but the German jury only ranked her 11th (!!!), for a total ranking of 4th (7 points).

In Russia, she was actually 3rd with TV voters, but only 11th with the Jury.

Interesting also the UK, in which the TV audience and the Jury had Conchita in 3rd place - but combined the UK had her at number 1.

(this is of course possible for example if there's a wide spread between a 1st ranked audience country and a sh*tty ranked Jury country)

So, the 60th Song Contest will be held here in 2015.

But where ?

All state governors, except Salzburg*, want the Song Contest take place in their states.

* Both the Salzburg Governor and Salzburg City mayor have said that they are opposed to holding it in the state, because it would meddle with Salzburg's unique standing in the world because of the Salzburger Festspiele - known all around the world. Besides, there's no venue in Salzburg that can host more than 10.000 people other than the Red-Bull arena, which has 30.000 seats, but no roof - making it an outdoor song contest.

...

That leaves:

* Vienna (@ the Stadthalle) - which is an indoor hall used for concerts (17.000 seats)
* Graz (@ the Schwarzlhalle) - which is an indoor hall used for concerts (20.000 seats)
* Innsbruck (@ the Olympic Hall) - which is an indoor hall used for concerts (12.000 seats)
* Klagenfurt (@ the football stadium) - which would be semi-outdoor because the roof is not over the football field, only where the people sit (35.000 seats)

In Copenhagen, they used a hall where ca. 11.000 people were able to watch.

The venues in other states such as the Lake-Arena (Seebühne) in Bregenz (used in James Bond movies) - would be outdoors and could be too small (only 5.000-8.000 visitors).

...

The ORF will decide in roughly 2 months where to host it. If the ORF chooses a smaller outdoor venue, it would be the first outdoor Eurovision Song Contest. The ORF is also budgeting ca. 20-50 Mio. € for hosting the event.

The Festbühne (Lake Stage) in Bregenz (Vorarlberg) used for the Bregenz Festival would have it's own flair though:

I would prefer it having it in Innsbruck, I live just 20 minutes away from it Wink

(Bergisel picture)

Of course. But outdoor ...

I'd prefer Innsbruck over Vienna too, I'm living just 90 minutes away as well.

But I wouldn't attend this thing next year.

Quite the scene today in Vienna when Conchita was honoured with an official state reception at the Chancellor's Office and met with Austrian Chancellor Faymann and then gave a brief concert outside:

The ORF (Austrian broadcaster) and the EBU (European Broadcasting Union) have announced today that they agreed on an indoor location for the 2015 Song Contest.

That virtually means that only the following venues will get to host it:

* Vienna (Stadthalle)
* Vienna (Messehalle)
* Graz (Messehalle)
* Graz (Schwarzlhalle)
* Innsbruck (OlympiaWorld)

Those have capacities of over 10.000 people.

All others are unlikely, because they are too small.

Who's going to moderate the Contest ?

* On the men's side, Ö3-moderator Andi Knoll is basically a lock for the job.

* On the women's side, there are a lot who could moderate it:

Mirjam Weichselbraun (MTV presenter, TV-show presenter, orginially from Tyrol - so if Innsbruck gets it, then she's probably a lock to host it)

Bianca Schwarzjirg (PULS4 moderator)

Kristina Inhof (PULS4 moderator)

Doris Golpashin (TV moderator, various channels)

Silvia Schneider (PULS 4 moderator)

Larissa Marolt (topmodel and TV show celebrity)

Arabella Kiesbauer (former ORF TV and radio presenter)

Who's going to moderate the Contest ?

The ORF has picked the moderators for the 2015 Song Contest in Vienna, all 3 of them women:

* Mirjam Weichselbraun (left)
* Arabella Kiesbauer (2nd from right)
* Alice Tumler (right)

The 2014 winner Conchita Wurst will be an additional moderator out of the so-called "Green Room" and will perform a song (or more) at the contest.
