So far, the Rafah operation has been very effective and much less bloody than the bombing raids. Waiting this long was a mistake.

I mean, the US gave Israel an ultimatum on Rafah. In any case I wonder what the purpose of the operation occuring right now is. They've already got the corridor. Just more sweeps into new areas?

Is there any proof that the IDF knew collateral was “inevitable”?

If you have an explanation for how storming a building deep beyond your side's zone of control next to a crowded market in the middle of the day and then calling in airstrikes when you inevitably end up in a firefight could lead to anything other than a bloodbath then I'd love to hear it

I think every reasonable person would know that collateral damage or even an outright bloodbath was inevitable but I'd argue it's justified to rescue the hostages.

We--the big-picture, human we--really need a rethink on large-scale air warfare and whether it should really be seen as any more acceptable than the use of chemical or biological weapons. This is one of the few things on which Baldwin and other interwar-era statesmen had fundamentally the right instincts.

I guess my question is if Hamas said they'd slaughter thousands of Gazans every day till Israel capitulated would people claiming to be "pro-Palestinian" blame Israel or Hamas. I think many of them would blame Israel.

If you are only air striking military targets which are not super close to population centers then I think the answer is clearly yes.

Are you going to ban artillery, too? Air strikes are just a delivery method.

You can't make war not horrible. War is inherently horrible.

What are you achieving by avoiding air power?

Well, the former is at least something - and the "expectations" were to a significant extent a product of how Israel has conducted the conflict previously.

Nah, the guy they killed two days ago wasn’t a nobody, but he wasn’t one of the very top guys (much less one of the top three) either.

Someone inside Hezbollah has been playing too much Civilisation 5.

They have used a Trebuchet to send flaming projectiles into Israel to set fire to bushland.

You don't know what a Trebuchet is?

You've come to the right place.

It wouldn't surprise me if Pope Francis arrives on the scene with his crusaders in metal helmets and long swords.

In other news, Netanyahu admit to killing 14,000 Palestinian terrorists to Dr Phil.

No I mean as of that post they had literally just assassinated someone, according to early reports. We'll see if that is confirmed.

First Palestinian athlete to compete in the Olympics dies in Gaza due to lack of treatment.

Quote from: Middle East Eye
The first Palestinian athlete to participate in the Olympic games died on Wednesday at the Nuseirat refugee camp in Gaza as a result of kidney failure due to power outages and medical shortages as a result of the ongoing Israeli war and siege of the enclave.

Majed Abu Maraheel, who passed away at the age of 61, became the first athlete to be the flag bearer and represent Palestinians at the Olympic Games in Atlanta in 1996. Being a distance runner, he competed in the 10km race.

Since his breakthrough on the world stage, more than 20 Palestinian men and women have been able to compete at Olympic competitions.

"He was a Palestinian icon, and he will remain as such," his brother told Paltoday TV after the funeral.

Holy crap, you’re right!  They just took out Hashim Safi Al-Din aka Hashem Safieddine.  He was third in command of Hezbollah and leader of its entire military wing.

There was speculation that it was him or another guy at the very top level, Israel claimed they didn't assassinate anyone. There's still some dispute on if someone actually died since Hezbollah is covering up the attack zone. Some argument that Israel hadn't known he was there.

Some western nations have said they'll take a few thousand. But the Arab nations won't. They say it is because Israel won't let them back in and it is ethnic cleansing but the real reason is that they know what happens when Palestinians get into neighboring countries, and also if all the civilians leave Hamas can't use them as human shields and propaganda tools against the Jews.

And we all know that in this instance what "they say" is overwhelmingly likely to be true, sadly.

You are absolutely and utterly delusional if you think that the US will allow Israel to empty Gaza of Palestinians much less claim it as their own.

Palestinians live in a world where their only real news source is Al Jazeera, so it is hard to blame them for their delusions. What's your excuse?

What this war surely shows is that the US has less influence over Israel than some have previously assumed - so no I don't think it "delusional" to think the above at all, indeed it is arguably rational.
