We all (or nearly all, anyway) know that Hamas and Hezbollah are not nice people. The point is, that alone does not give Israel carte blanche to do whatever it wants.

There's only one big problem with Hamas and Hezbollah.

All hat, no cattle.

This is a very strange claim to make in light of everything that's occurred since October 7th and the IDF themselves wanting a truce to free the hostages and prepare for a war in the north.

That's because losing as violently and horribly as possible in full public view is Hamas' primary war strategy. There's no metric by which Israel can be said to be losing the war on a military level.

Would be nice if there's progress on such points as "We can kill the hostages before returning them".

Israel is sending negotiators back

Hamas are facing their own significant internal dissent now. (Warning for a graphic image)

In light of the (mostly bad faith) criticism some users have made on here that Israel 'isn't achieving any of its war goals,' I think its important to ask - what is the pathway to Gaza achieving its military and political goals? What is Gaza's vision for after the war (if they indeed envision an 'after' the war and don't just intend on permanent 'resistance.') If there are no realistic answers to these questions, isn't it time the leadership of Gaza ends this destructive war they started?

If there's a permanent ceasefire then Hamas has already won by foiling Israel's objective to destroy them. Sinwar will crawl out of his hole to give a victory speech and Muslim countries will crawl over each other to pour money into the reconstruction of Gaza. After that all he would need to do wait; the unquestioningly pro-Israel Boomers in the West are being replaced by a generation that views flying the Israeli flag as comparable to flying a swastika. The ancient Abu Mazen will surely be replaced by someone more amenable to Hamas, particularly if Sinwar is perceived as having dealt the IDF their worst humiliation in its history.

So was Biden coherent here, did Biden do nothing and bureaucrats talked, or did Netanyahu just steamroll through this conversation over Biden? All we get here is a readout written by the American side.

1) There won’t be a permanent ceasefire until Sinwar and Deif are dead and Hamas is crushed in Gaza, but keep dreaming.

 2) Ceasefire or no, the second Sinwar sticks crawls out of whatever sewer he’s hiding in, he’ll be blown up.  Whatever else you may believe about I/P, everyone - including Sinwar - knows this is true

3) Your post is blatant wishcasting.

The fact that IDF leadership prefer a permanent ceasefire even if Hamas remains in power to continued fighting suggests that the possibility is far from a dream. It isn't because the Times of Israel, the New York Times or the IDF are "dreaming" but because they understand that the only alternative to a comprehensive ceasefire is a bloody ground war against Hezbollah, a war that everyone knows Israel isn't prepared for.

What's actually wishcasting is imagining that the Search & Destroy strategy pioneered by America's worst general William Westmoreland will work any better against Hamas or Hezbollah than it worked against the Viet Cong. Again, it's not just crazy Israel-haters like me saying this, military leaders from Israel's closest allies have been pointing out the failure and incoherence of the Israeli strategy for months at this point. Nobody in the IDF would even consider talking about leaving Hamas in power if they had a viable alternative but faced with the alternative of a war they can't win they'll take a small loss over a huge one. Though with Madman Netanyahu in charge they might not have a choice.

The Viet Cong were effectively finished as a major force after the Tet Offensive. It was the NVA who very much led things from that point and they had other assets those forces don't have, like proper air forces and air defence.

Israel definitely needs time to rest its forces and recuperate. Whack-a-mole works for them, especially if they control the southern border area.

It seems that Hamas have dropped their desire to startwith a permanent ceasefire, hence the Israelis re-entering negotiations.
