I'm just glad he isn't pro-Russia tbh. Quite a few of his political type are.

Abbot has left out the Cold War while saying Russia has never been defeated. The conflict in Ukraine is about fighting for lose territory after the Soviet Union was broken up into smaller sovereign states in the nineties. Russia triumphing would not unleash a new Iron Curtin, it will say to the world that Russia is still a major global power that should not be underestimated.

If the Toretsk stronghold and it's neighboring towns fall this would be the last unchanged 2014 lines to fall into Russian hands. Near Horlivka.

He presented the situation as a business opportunity, insisting he would not take sides in the war.

“This is a part of our economic revival and important for us. Yes, we do export our ammunition,” he said in an interview. “We cannot export to Ukraine or to Russia . . . but we have had many contracts with Americans, Spaniards, Czechs, others. What they do with that in the end is their job."

"German investigators said the cause [of the fire at the Diehl Metall plant in Berlin] was likely an accident. But Western security officials now say the fire was set by Russian saboteurs trying disrupt shipments of critical arms and ammunition to Ukraine."

"As with Carsten Linke's espionage, this plot was unmasked not by Germany but by an allied nation's intelligence service: "The intercepts, which were passed on to the German government by an intelligence agency of a North Atlantic Treaty Organization ally, were first reported by the Bild newspaper in Germany."

Ukraine launched a deadly attack on Crimea, with the assistance of American made weapons.

Quote
The Ukrainian military launched several US-made ATACMS long-range missiles armed with highly controversial cluster munitions on Russia’s Crimea on Sunday, resulting in numerous civilian casualties, the Defense Ministry in Moscow has said.

The strike was first reported by Sevastopol Governor Mikhail Razvozhaev. He said that the attack killed at least three people, including two children. The death toll later rose to four. According to Russia’s Health Ministry, 124 people were injured, including 27 children.

James you’re literally just reposting the stuff you admitted you were wrong about in the Trump/NATO thread.

Where was I wrong in saying the war was started by hostile Western allies seeking to weaken the Russian government? The news is exactly what I have been saying in the forum, which is NATO allies and Ukraine are willing to sacrifice for an unwinnible war.

This is very alarming. I'm from South Africa, and before this war we didn't get involved in European politics. A lot of people are sympathetic to Russia now. Some of this is Putin's outreach to our government.

This is very alarming. I'm from South Africa, and before this war we didn't get involved in European politics. A lot of people are sympathetic to Russia now. Some of this is Putin's outreach to our government.

The more Global South they are, the more the country tends to be somewhat understanding of Russia. India and China despite their differences for example, both stand on the same place regarding Russia.

However, I think this is especially true in African continent. A lot of USSR geopolitical goodwill/badwill around the globe was inherited by Russia all around the world and it’s undeniable the role that USSR had on strengthening anti-colonialist movements all around. USSR geopolitical purpose in Africa was giving these countries more leverage in how they negotiate with the West as if the West (mostly Europe) was too oppressive and exploitative in their colonial goals, more African countries could just threaten “becoming communist” in order to get better deals with the West, in position of better equality.

USSR fall and unipolarity was awful for Africa in that sense, as the West had no reason to pay much attention to the continent and could limit their geopolitical attention to mostly cheap assistencialism that did nothing to help for the structural development of Africa. They had no one to compete against them after all so no need to do anything to impress Africa.

In South Africa specific case there’s the case of how countries positioned regarding Apartheid too. USSR was one of Nelson Mandela’s main allies and his party, the left-wing ANC is the one that leads the country to this day.

If the opposition once takes power in South Africa one day, they will somewhat be more distant from Russia as it tends to be whiter —> different historical side regarding apartheid —> less impacted or grateful by USSR revolutionary stances of the past —> Less inclined to see Russia as a positive counterweight to the West.

But even then, it’s really hard for me to see the post-apartheid South Africa of today fully turning against Russia in a similar-ish level of Western countries.

Sodol was only appointed to the position he was just fired from in February, after Zaluzhny and Generals close to him were given the can:

"Yuri Sodol, a Ukrainian general who was accused by Bohdan Krotevych (and others) of "killing more Ukrainian soldiers than any Russian" through incompetence and the use of "meat assaults" has been sacked [as head of Joint Forces Command] by Zelensky.

He will be replaced by Brigadier General Andrii Hnatov.

Sodol was extremely unpopular amongst the ZSU's rank and file; soldiers have been grumbling about him for quite a while.

Once Bohdan Krotevych - the extremely well respected commander of the Azov Brigade - denounced him publicly [earlier today], his position had probably become untenable."

Russian President Vladimir Putin’s peace proposal for Ukraine remains on the table despite Kiev’s recent missile attack on Sevastopol, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters on Monday.

Ukraine conducted a missile barrage on Russia’s Crimean peninsula on Sunday using US-made ATACMS equipped with cluster munition warheads. While Russian air defenses managed to intercept the missiles, one ended up exploding in the air above the city of Sevastopol, leading to casualties among the civilian population.

Well it is not illogical that Putin would desire a settlement where he can at least lock in his current gains, if the West would comply.

Everyone's favourite former Australian Prime Minister, Tony Abbott, talks about his opinions on the Ukrainian War.

Tony Abbott Talks Ukraine Full Interview

https://youtu.be/HcDd9gjvoyU?start=807

Tony threatened to shirt-front Putin at the 2014 G20 overvtge MH17 aircraft missile attack. He speaks better now than he did when he was Prime Minister.

Tony, like most Australian's, is pro-Ukrainian.
