Alaska

Gruening wins in 1980

Clark Gruening (D), 1981-1999
Tony Knowles (D), 1999-2009*

*resigned to become Secretary of the Interior

Many Republicans thought they would gain a Senate seat in Alaska thanks to the split in the Democrats after Gruening defeated Senator Mike Gravel in the 1980 primary and Reagan expected to win the state. After all, Gravel defeated Clark's grandfather Ernest Gruening in 1968.

Gravel swallowed his pride and campaigned for Gruening. An overconfident Frank Murkowski saw his 10 point lead in the polls vanish by election day. Against all odds, Clark Gruening became the junior Senator from Alaska.

When the Democrats won back control of the Senate, Gruening became Chairman of the Committee on Interior and Insular Affairs. He held the chairmanship from 1987-1995. Gruening chose not to seek reelection in 1998. Governor Tony Knowles was elected in a landslide over an unknown 35 year old mayor of Wasilla named Sarah Palin.

But Palin would not remain unknown because in 2008, she shocked the political world when she defeated 18 term Congressman Don Young in the GOP primary and defeated Ethan Berkowitz in the November election. Governor Sean Parnell was pleased.

Alabama:

Class III

J. Lister Hill (1938-1963)
John M. Patterson (1963-)

Hill suprisingly declined to run for reelection and outgoing Governor, John M. Patterson won the nod. Over the years he eventually moved from a segregationist positions, but remains the last former Dixiecrat in Senate. Currently second-most senior Senator after PPT Daniel Inouye

That's quite a picture. I guess back then if you were bad in school they sent you to the execution chamber.
