Anybody think Rahm Emanuel might run for president in 2016?

Rahm's ambition was to be Speaker, but now that he's out of Congress, he may not get to go back anytime soon. If he's successful in shuttling Obama's agenda through Congress, however, and if he stays as CoS for a few years, it doesn't seem implausible to me that in lieu of being Speaker he would instead aspire to be president.

Who knows?

Anybody want to game Emanuel/Gillibrand (D) vs., say, Jindal/Thune (R)?

(We can all have a good laugh over this thread 8 years from now.)

Our first Jewish President. Why not? I mean, if he wanted it and no one could get that much dirt on him...he should definately run in 2016.

Chief of Staff isn't really a springboard to the Presidency, certainly not directly. That said, he's still in his 40s, and I could see him succeeding Durbin.

...Good look with that.

Rahm would probably need to take an open senate seat if he even wanted to consider running for the white house.

I don't really think it's likely, but in no way is it impossible. After all Cheney had been, House Reprasentitive, Chief of Staff, and Secretary of Defense, before becoming VP.

Of course Emanuel would need to  be promoted. He'd not be very successful running as Obama's CoS. However CoS rarely (never) serves for all the eight years, and neither does the secretaries in the cabinet. So if Emanuel can get himself promoted to a cabinet possition, where he does a great job and creates an imidge for himself, I could see it happen.

I'd much rather see your suggested ticket reversed though, Gillibrand/Emanuel in 2016 Smiley

Emanuel represents everything that's wrong with the Democratic Party today.

Maybe if he gets promoted to a Cabinet position down the line. As long as Obama was still reasonably popular, I'd be surprised not see some administration member running claiming to be heir apparent. If Biden doesn't do it, then a Cabinet member doesn't seem the far fetch.

He's just like Dick Morris, but did not feel out of favor

If he'd stayed in the House, he'd have been Speaker by 2021.

That's exactly why I did not believed until a last moment that he would accept this post. A post he can be dismissed in any minute. His congressional district was safe, he was fourth-ranking Democrat and, given age of Pelosi, Hoyed and Clyburn, almost certainly top ranking in fugure.

Well, I'd rather stay in House on his place.

He said he doesn't want to be Chief of Staff for all four/eight years, he could be moved up a post, giving him a springboard.

I don't know that Rahm would be a good candidate just because of how far to the left and, well, how mean he is.

He is resigning at the end of 2010 I think. He wants to be Speaker of the ohuse.

He's out of the house now, and unless he wants to try and take his seat back anytime soon, he won't be back in it.
