So there's this thing I've been pondering for a while. Utah is considered to be one of the Republicans' safest states, and the idea that it would turn Democratic even in a huge landslide is mostly quite silly.

However what I've been wondering is, could a moderate Democratic mormon flip the state? For example we have New Mexico senator Tom Udall. If he were nominated to run for president, could he win Utah against a non-mormon republican. Is religion a big enough issue for the inhabitans for Democrats to have a victory there? Will it have any effect?

If Huckabee, or any other Republican who publically spoke out against Mormons was the nominee, then yes. Otherwise, only if the Mormon Democrat was leading by over 10 points nationwide.

I don't think the Democrats should be worrying about winning Utah at the presidential level anytime soon.  However, there is some leftward movement within the state and I think that a very good Democratic candidate might be able to squeak out a statewide win against a mediocre Republican.

Probably not. Maybe if he also was from Utah.

In which case he'd get slaughtered USwide.

Nope.  Not now, not in 2012.  Beyond that, who knows?

I'm inclined to say NO. Although Salt Lake City/Salt Lake County is expanding and become more latte liberalish, as evidenced by Barack Obama's narrow victory in the county in 2008, the Republicans still have a monopoly on the Mormons due to their hypocritical and pathetic lock on "family values." If you don't believe me, look at the other two counties Obama won: the percentage of Mormons in each county is under 50 percent in both counties. Hmmmm.

The best chance for a Democrat to carry Utah would be Rep. Jim Matheson (D, UT-02) and even then it would be an uphill battle and he'd probably get slaughtered nationwide for running as a conservative Democratic Mormon candidate. I just think Utah is too stubbornly Republican to vote for any Democrat, at least for now and at least until the Mormons stop voting with their Bibles or whatever they call it, it's like running in Nazi Germany out there I'm sure.

I wholeheartedly agree with a previous poster who said that Democrats shouldn't worry about winning Utah, at least not right now. It did amaze me, though, at how wildly the most Republican state in the nation swung so Democratic, which leaves me to believe that over time Democrats may be able to break the Republican stranglehold in Utah but I don't think it will be anytime soon.

One must also look at the other GOP bastion of Idaho, which contains a significant amount of Mormons as well and McCain underperformed George W. Bush here as well; Obama almost held McCain into the upper 50s which is very impressive for a Democrat to do so well in the Gem State.

Maybe. One thing to consider is that with a Mormon Democratic nominee, there is likely to be a big anti-Mormon push among conservative activists (expect Fox News to run a lot of "informational" pieces on LDS history...). Such a phenomenon would be more likely to flip Utah than the actual fact of the Democrat's LDS identity... if that makes sense.

Have any Democratic candidates for statewide office not been Mormon in recent times? Comparing their performance to those of Mormon nominees would be a good starting point for this analysis. Likewise for Republican nominees, though I must assume there haven't been many non-Mormons who have been able to survive GOP primaries in Utah.

I think the vast majority of Mormons, while desiring more Mormons in the White House, would rather vote for a socially and economically conservative Republican than a liberal, Mormon, Democrat.

Glenn Beck is awesome, love watching his program.

On topic, Utah will probably stay safe REP for a while.  Nothing to worry.
