I am curious to see where people speculate where the MN gubentorial race might go. the poll is based on the speculated front runners in both party's primaries.

Mark Dayton would win in a walk, Coleman clearly damaged himself by drawing out the election process in Minnesota.  Minnesota is clearly a secular state now and with that the next governor will be a Democrat.

Never assume that a Democrat will win in Minnesota. The DFL has a tendency to pick terrible candidates for Governor, and they have to fight both the Republican and whoever the Independence Party puts up to suck votes away.

The last Governor elected Governor of Minnesota was Rudy Peprich in 1986, right?

Incorrect, the last Governor elected Governor of Minnesota was Tim Pawlenty in 2006.

The last Governor Democrat elected Governor of Minnesota was Rudy Peprich in 1986, right?

To answer Kalwejt's corrected question, the answer is yes.  Republican Arne Carlson defeated Peprich for reelection (51% to 47%) in 1990, even though Carlson was a late replacement nominee (although he had run in and lost the September primary) after the primary winner dropped out after being charged with sexual improprieties.  Carlson served two terms, followed by one for Reform > Independence Party member Jesse Ventura and two (assuming he serves out his second term) for Republican Tim Pawlenty, who is not running for reelection (although he could in Minnesota - are there any term limits for the Governor there?).

According to this poll Dems lead Coleman

Minneapolis Mayor R.T. Rybak led 43-37 and former Senator Mark Dayton led 41-39

http://publicpolicypolling.blogspot.com/2009/07/coleman-hurt-by-recount.html

The Democratic trend of Minnesota during the Mondale/Cater years to the Kerry Gore years was interrupted by the Ross Perot/Jesse Ventura movement and likewise Proenvironment republicans like Pawlenty and Coleman were elected. I think now with the Obama administration he turned Minnesota from purple to secular and now we have a better chance today to elect a Democrat.

I would probably vote for Coleman, but I don't think he'd win, after what's happened in the last 6 months.

Yes, I wanted to write Democratic Governor, but once again I was writing quicker than thinking Wink

If Coleman is the best candidate for GOP, that's GOP problem

Especially after this 6-month soap opera, he's not going to accomplish antyhing in politics ever again

Highly doubt it. After Minnesota electing idiots like Ventura and ..... Franken, it's possible for anything to happen.

All the people being referred to did not have a net 20 disapproval like Coleman did before the whole court challenge nonsense. His favorables are probably in the 30s now.

(not limited to Dayton and Coleman)

Personally, Bachmann

But in reality land, Norm Coleman

Former Congressmen Jim Ramstead has opted out of the gubentorial race. Mark Dayton is the likely frontrunner for the DFL and Norm Coleman is the likely frontrunner for the GOP. I predict former US Senator Dean Barkley will run for Governor under the independence ticket.

Ugh. It would almost be a repeat election from hell.
