My favorite republican and my favorite democrat.

I'd say Edwards wins in a very close one

The McCain of four years ago would have killed the Edwards of today.

If both were running in 2004, it would be closer, but I still think McCain would win a solid victory.

If both run in 2008, which is actually possible, I could see Edwards winning because he would no longer be viewed at too young, and McCain might be viewed as too old.

Both appeal to the members of the opposing party, but McCain is a legitimate moderate while Edwards only sounds like one.

(Of course, if I actually thought Edwards WAS a moderate, I wouldn't be supporting him!)

I think in a McCain Edwards race I'd write myself in.

Steven,

Thanks!!! Actually, the McCain/Edwards race would leave me looking for a third party candidate, but since I would assume that no third party was viable, I'd be forced to vote for that idiot McCain. At least he would be somewhat tough on national security even if he's more concerned with being adored by the media that he is with being a good Senator.

Did anyone else see McCain's rant about the omnibus on C-SPAN2 1.5 months ago?  He was funny as hell.

The Southwest would go for McCain and the South would go for Edwards.
I dunno about the rest.

In some very conservative states, McCain may get less support than a Republican usually gets, but he'd still win the states. States like VA and such would have increased margins for McCain.

I meant to say "Deep South". It also depends what the main issues the election was fought over

Edwards would lose most Southern states.  Certainly all the die-hard ones - MS, AL, GA, SC, KY.  He'd have a  chance at NC, AR, LA, TN, VA.  He'd have a lock only on WV.

A McCain-Edwards matchup would end like this:

McCain-271
Edwards-266

McCain would win by 51%-48%.

There is a much larger base of republicans who would not vote for a liberal on the issues than democrats who would not vote for a conservative on the issues. Regionally the election would be bizarre, I'd say McCain would win the west and the North (spare NY and MA), Edwards would win the south and industrial midwest.

The South would largely vote for McCain.  Its not like they only vote by the candidate's accent - they are aware of policy differences.

Would it be enough to swing sure Gop states like Utah or Idaho to the Dems? Cheesy

If there's an extreme sit-out of Reps it could happen... Wink

I would hope for an Edwards victory although I do like McCain and against many others would probably support him.

If McCain was liberal enough on social issues he might cause a revolt!

I think McCain claims publicly to be pro-life.

He's mildly pro-life, although what I seemed to remember about him was that he favored banning abortion with the exception of rape and the like.

He would change the results in the northeast, especially if he didn't argue against gun-control or gay-marriage. Its the social issues that keep our base together- and we would be likely to vote for a fiscally responsible candidate like McCain.

Edwards is second rank to McCain and it actually wouldn't be all that close.

McCain: 400
Edwards: 138

Presdient McCain... hmm...
