Italia

PdL 29
PD 23
Lega 8
Italia dei Valori 7
UDC 5

I suppose than this is a defeat for Berlusconi?

Only 40% is counted... but it's a surprisingly good result and gives me hope that no all Italians are idiots.

Yeah, I'm holding out hope that it gets better since we still have about 60% left to be counted. That being said, Berlusconi should not have opened his mouth about this being a landslide. It looks like turn out was down big time.

The prediction by Sky 24 right now shows PdL with 35.6% and PD with about 26%. The PD was expected to get around 25-27% but PdL should be around 40%.

PDL is the biggest party in Europe it seems, the only party with more than 10 Mio. votes.

CDU/CSU was next with 9.97 Mio. votes.

Still, Berlusconi's party started the campaign with a 15-20 point margin that narrowed down to about 12-14 points two weeks before the election, when the polls were banned. Now the final result will be 35-26, a 9-point margin. It's still a win, but certainly much closer than he would have thought. The Left in Italy was not "humiliated" at least, like he said.

The strong Lega result (11%) was probably because of high turnout in the North.

Sure, it wasn't humiliating but it says something when your opponent (Berlusconi) is in the middle of a dirty sex scandal, that's all the people want to talk about, his party underperforms and you still can't get more than what the polls had you stuck at for weeks.

Listen, I'm the first to admit that PdL should have hit 40% but I can live with the fact that turnout was down because you have the Prime Minister/leader of the ruling party with pictures of his penis floating around along with some other unflattering rumors. Plus, Silvio bragging about such a big win certainly kept some supporters at home. I'm less willing to live with that factor since he could have controlled that whereas the rumors about him and this girl were more out of his control (at least when compared to his result predictions).

Of course his lead of twenty points was going to dip. The fact that it only dipped by eleven points says something, too. And, again, I can't stress enough how the PdL underperformed. PD has nothing to brag about after today. Nothing. They gained one seat. PdL gained five. Nothing to brag about.

Results in the three towns that mean the most to me. I'm just posting the top five vote getters in each town...

Carife, Campania (where my Dad's side of the family is from)

IL POPOLO DELLA LIBERTA'  371               36,08

PARTITO DEMOCRATICO  210                    20,42

UNIONE DI CENTRO  128                          12,45

DI PIETRO ITALIA DEI VALORI  111           10,79

SINISTRA E LIBERTA'  59                             5,73

Enna, Sicilia (where my Mom's side of the family is from). Damn MpA kept PdL out of first! Even then, PD does alarmingly well here. I'm very disappointed.

PARTITO DEMOCRATICO  4.002                                                 35,58

IL POPOLO DELLA LIBERTA'  2.905                                            25,83

UNIONE DI CENTRO  1.498                                                        13,32

LA DESTRA-MPA- PENSIONATI -ALL.DI CENTRO  1.210               10,75

DI PIETRO ITALIA DEI VALORI  617                                             5,48

Quarto, Campania  (I mentioned before why this place means something to me)

IL POPOLO DELLA LIBERTA'  8.134                               49,64

PARTITO DEMOCRATICO  3.617                                    22,07

UNIONE DI CENTRO  1.232                                           7,51

DI PIETRO ITALIA DEI VALORI  1.184                            7,22

RIFOND.COM. - SIN.EUROPEA - COM.ITALIANI  808      4,93

Ironically, my friends despise Berlusconi. Not sure if they voted for PD or one of the other parties. I know one of them voted for Veltroni in 2008 just because he hates Berlusconi so much even though he dislikes PD, too. Whatever the case, I'm amused that I'm friends with such people in such a PdL stronghold.

It's not like a majority of Italians saw these pictures. They are banned in Italy. Maybe 2%, who surfed in the Internet to the Spanish website of El Pais saw these pictures ...

You don't think more people heard about them? Are they actually banned in Italy? I mean, I'd believe it considering the power Berlusconi has in the media which is obviously disgusting.

I saw 26%.

The Right elsewhere didn't have to compete with this type of scandal and also have the benefit of campaigning against the incumbent Leftists in many cases.

I don't need to imagine a result with Fini's crew because that's not going to happen.

I don't know why you're looking forward to the next Italian General election.  Tongue  Berlusconi still has decent personal ratings, his party still comfortably beat the Left and turn out won't be nearly as poor in a General compared to this election (which would help PdL). Also, add another 11% to Berlusconi's 35% if we're talking about a General since Lega Nord will be with him. Plus, you're going to be waiting awhile for the next General in Italy.  Wink

Results from Italy's eleven* largest cities show only five cities voting for PD - Genoa, Turin, Bologna, Florence and Venice. The results in Turin and Venice were very close though. Bologna and Florence were predictable.

PD actually came in third in Catania (behind PdL and MpA). I was actually surprised that the Right won (and by somewhat comfortable margins) in other major cities. I guess it's just weird for me, as an American, to see the Right actually win in major cities.

* I did eleven cities since Venice is the eleventh largest in Italy and thought they ought to be included.

Why are the Tories leaving the EPP?

To satisfy the hardcore Euroskeptics within the party.

PdL at 35% is a very disappointing result for them.Anything less than 40% would have been bad,35% is very bad.

Eh, I think polling five percent under what was expected is disappointing but hardly a disaster give the circumstances.  Tongue

So, instead of an incredibly humiliating defeat, you just simply got defeated. Good enough.  Tongue

By the way, I'll remind you to get on my case when my side loses in American elections.  Wink

Go easy. He's a young socialist in Italy. It's not easy for them these days. We should be able to relate as young conservative Republicans in the U.S.  Wink
