Please discuss.

This is something I've always found fascinating.

And it's not strictly limited to Britain, of course. It's more about European constitutional monarchies in general.

Yes. Partly because I can't think of any decent President for the UK.

I also support retaining the Queen as head of state should Scotland become an independent nation.

I'd say probably very weakly yes, but only because of the interest in the monarchy brings the country lots of tourism money. I would support a republic in Canada, Australia, etc. though.

I've been a republican for ages now. Not that it's really important or anything.

No.  The fishbowl that the Royals are forced to live in is something I would consider to be cruel and unusual punishment.  Free the Windsors!  End the monarchy!

She is right. She is supporting our seal hunters against fascist ecologists from Europe.

I'm Australian, and I don't want a republic here, so I guess I can't support one there Smiley

Of course not.

A meaningless figurehead presidency is a good idea, but making the position lifetime, inheritable, and vested in the richest family in the country which is also freed of paying taxes is just obscene.

No. I oppose Monarchies in principle - mainly because I don't believe (and the British Royal family proves it) that intelligence or abilities are inherited.

Wow, so there's some people who agree with me? I can't stand the Monarchy. It's silly nonsense. They are worshipped by most people in this country, even though they haven't done anything to earn it.

They have to pay income tax now.

Actually I'd look at which is greater: The public funding of the royal family's activities or the tourism dollars brought because of the royals and decide based on that. And of course I'd still be an extreme republican in any other Commonwealth country.

I'm totally opposed the the monarchy. They're completely pointless, i'm more in favour of a republic and a presidency.
