Yet another 1960 scenario.

In 1960

Senate Majority Leader Lyndon Johnson of Texas pulls off an upset and defeats young Massachusetts Senator John Kennedy to win the Democratic Presidential nomination.  To firm up the Democratic progressive element, Johnson picks rising Democratic star Senator Hubert Humphrey of Minnesota for Vice President, someone Johnson also has a great deal of admiration for.

As expected, Vice President Richard Nixon, of California, wins the Republican Presidential nomination.  Nixon believes that high profile Governor Nelson Rockefeller of New York would be the strongest Vice Presidential candidate, and offers him the job.  To his surprise, and delight, Rockefeller accepts.

How does this 1960 election turn out?

Please discuss, using maps if you wish.

Republican
Vice President Richard M Nixon (CA)
Governor Nelson A Rockefeller (NY)

Democrat
Senator Majority Leader Lydon B Johnson (TX)
Senator Hubert H Humphrey (MN)

Rockefeller waould be the better choice for Nixon to contrast democratic ticket's liberalism and keep determinating states like New Jersey and Illinois.

Here's what happens.

Johnson does not run as well as Kennedy, and he does not sweep the south.

Nixon and Rockefeller win.

Nixon/Rockefeller                     282
Johnson/Humphrey                  236
Unpledged Electors                    19
