I fully agree with Verily on this one.  I want to add that I don't think gay marriage would have been a particularly good wedge issue, either.  Even in a state like Vermont, it's probably not going to swing enough persuadables to matter.  Gay marriage is a powerful wedge issue because it scares a lot of very swingy voters.  But Douglas has always had enough headroom that, even if he lost all moderates to whom gay marriage is a major issue, he'd probably win.

But, yea, gay marriage is totally dead as a wedge issue.  That leaves VT Dems with very little of anything against Douglas, other than blaming him for whatever national ills.  And I gather that perceptions in Vermont are that things aren't especially bad, at least at the state level.  I see little traction.

It's hard to create 20% of the vote out of an issue that was made irrelevant because the legislature overruled his veto...  if his veto actually held, then the advertising would be more effective, but people probably just don't feel affected by such a move by Douglas

Equal rights under the law affects everyone; these issues don't exist in a vacuum. Would you have said that civil rights legislation didn't matter to whites in the 60's?
