The trend map for PA in 1996:

What's up with the Pittsburgh area? Unlike in '08, the neighbouring areas of Ohio & W. Virginia didn't show a similarly large trend. Being neither effete northeastern elites nor Honorable Protestants from Small Towns on the Plains, it seems weird that folks in this area would particularly care more than the rest of the country about the difference between Bush Sr. and Bob Dole.

It probably has to do with Perot.

Perot's numbers in the area don't seem particularly remarkable; both times around, a bit lower than average in Allegheny, about average in the surrounding counties.

The demographic changes that have continued to this day to make the area progressively more Republican were beginning then.

Similar GOP trends that have continued since started showing up in 1996 in Kentucky, Tennessee, Missouri, even Arkansas.
