I've got stuff to contribute so I'm gonna go ahead and make this. The election should coincide with the Governor election this month.

I'll have an act later to amend the "Help the Dirty South Study Act" into something legible, plus some other stuff.

This one took some time. Smiley Note that, in addition to the general clean-up, I took away the minimum age requirement (why punish someone for graduating early? Tongue) and also put in a minimum college GPA requirement. Any comments/criticisms would be greatly appreciated.

Perhaps the money dispersed should be proportional to performance. It seems ridiculous that someone with a 4.5 GPA & perfect scores on the SATs would get no more aid than someone who barely meets the requirements.

I was trying to replicate the intent of the original bill as closely as possible, although I'd be sympathetic to such a change- feel free to offer an amended act if you'd like. Honestly, though, I doubt many strongly performing students wouldn't already be getting a free ride anyway.

I heavily object to the word "unweighted" in the Help the Dirty South Study Act.  I would be open to voting for the change if the "un" is removed

I will support the changes (I admit I did hastily put together a bill).  I just think making it unweighted is not a smart idea as it encourages kids to take easier classes.

The plan itself, as far as standards, is modeled heavily after the NJStars program which allows NJ students to go to community college free for two years if they meet those standards, and then transfer to a state school for free after that time.

Really? Seems like it usually started the Friday after this one while I've been here.

This may come up in real life in Louisiana. However, this will probably have to wait until May.
