Ok lets say the Assasination attempt on President Truman's life on by Collazo and Torresola on November 1st, 1950 is succesful. Alben W. Barkley is sworn is as the 34th President of the United States. Due to a high sympathy vote, Barkley's approval ratings are floating around 70-60%. That pushes the 74 year old to run for his own term in 1952, and gets the nomination relativley easily. For his Vice Presidential running mate, he chooses the gifted orator Adlai Stevenson II, Governor of Illinois.

On the Republican Side, Ike sees running against the President as upatriotic and declines the nomination. The Taft forces are able to seize the nomination, and the Ohio Senator chooses infamous General Dougals MaCarthur as his running mate.

So how does the electoral map turn out?

Taft/McArthur                289
Barkley/Stevenson       242

A narrow win for Taft.

After 20 years of uninterrupted rule, the Democratic fatigue proves insurmountable for Barkley.
And any sympathy from the Truman assasination has long dissipated after two years of  Korean stalemate, corruption and economic instability.

Truman assassination effect + Taft ultraconservatism = Barkley easily elected.
Barkley : 355
Taft : 176

I couldn't bear the idea of Taft becoming president...

Nice Maps guys...I was thinking with an Incumbent President, and If Barkley handels the Korean war a little bit better he could have a bit of a rally around the flag effect. A gifted speaker like Adlai helps the 74 year old pull off several close states.

1. Most likely scenario

Alben W. Barkley/Adlai Stevenson II: 267 Electoral Votes
Robert Taft/Douglas MacArthur: 264 Electoral Votes

2. Best Case Scenario for Barkley

Alben W. Barkley/Adlai Stevenson II: 387 Electoral Votes
Robert Taft/Douglas MacArthur: 144 Electoral Votes

3. Worst Case Scenario for Barkley

Robert Taft/Douglas MacArthur: 418 Electoral Votes
Alben W. Barkley/Adlai Stevenson II: 113 Electoral Votes
