Now Gregg has withdrawn from Commerce and is presumably running for reelection.

I'm glad we can stop talking about Sununu now.

Why in the world would Sununu be given back his seniority, when Lautenberg was not?

Because Lautenberg was a damned idiot.

Lautenberg was so eager to get back into the U.S. Senate (and Daschle was so unenthusiastic about Lautenberg's fifth-choice candidacy) that he didn't bother spelling out a deal to restore his seniority with Dem leadership.  Meanwhile, Democrats talked Mondale out of retirement with a promise to restore his seniority.

It's all about the deals you make and how bad you're needed.

I don't know.  That's still one hell of a presumption.

I wouldn't assume something like that. If I were a betting man, I would say that Gregg has at least a 50% chance of retiring in 2010.

Well, my presumption was wrong. Union-Leader says he's retiring in 2010.

I was right! Gregg WILL NOT run in 2010:

http://www.unionleader.com/article.aspx?headline=Judd+Gregg+withdraws+as+nominee+for+Commerce+Secretary%2c+says+he+won%27t+run+in+2010&articleId=9c31f9b4-6117-4312-8eb0-647e1240e70a

Best of both worlds, we get a Democrat for Commerce Secretary and Gregg retires!

In the conference call he stated "there are other things to do in life."

HUZZAH! Not only is this clearly embarassing, but it reinforces the "Obama tried, Republicans can't compromise on anything" meme. Oh, and no incumbency advantage for any Rep Senator in NH.

+ Dem Sec of Commerce

+1 Retirement

Drinks on me!

There wasn't going to be an incumbency advantage anyway. Gregg's intended replacement (who is probably pretty annoyed with him that she had already started preparing for the appointment) had said she would not run for reelection.

Although maybe he will just resign now or something.

Well, I bet that all that waffling about being Commerce Secretary and now about running for reelection isn't exactly boosting his image among his constituents.

I know, I heard him say it too.  But he talked to a local ABC outlet and said he has no plans, so just adding to the conversation.

Another one bites the dust.  My prediction of having 65+ senators in 2011 looks better and better everyday.  I just hope Sebelius isn't picked for the HHS department because we need her in the Senate.

Embarassing for Obama, anyway.  He's screwed up with his pick for Commerce twice now.

Bring back Bob Smith!  ;-)

I like Sununu.  And until this recent clusterphuck involving the D-O-C, I liked Gregg.  But at this point, I'm reasonably confident of a Democratic pickup in the Granite State.  Still, neither man can be automatically counted out.  A lot can change between now and then.  Either way.

Anyone saw Sununu last night at the ''Daily Show''?
Taegan Goddard writes that it was really painful to watch.
