This will be a series of polls asking what U.S. state European countries are most similar to. We'll be starting with Germany.

It's closest to Indiana and Kansas in per capita GDP, it's a little bigger than New Mexico size wise and it's got more than twice the people as California.  It's also well over 90% white.  There is no state that compares well to Germany.  I picked Cali.

I went with SD, though any reasonably Lutheran state would work.

not counting politics thuogh. You have to combine the demographics of South Dakota with the politics of Vermont.

I tried to omit politics. If we count politics, then every developed country other than Australia/Israel/Japan would be closest to Vermont.

Bono is right for once. Germany is closest to PA.

***Disclaimer: Bono is wrong on every other issue, however. Palin hack.

Given how europe has de facto segregation in a way not seen outside of Missisipi or alabama today I'm going to say either of those states.

I'd say a combination of North Dakota and California.

California? Really? Aside from both being big, I don't really see it.

California seems more like France. Of course, California is probably going to win that one too. Tongue

PA,

A couple of other things that havent been mentioned...

PA like Germany tends (if I remember census maps correctly) a pretty distinct Catholic/protestant divide

Also a big industrial/post industrial state...though this may not be the strongest case

and outside of maybe Wisconsin...the best beers.

By population density... Maryland. (Which, come to think of it, has protestant and catholic rural areas. And geologically quite distinct plains and uplands areas in a way reminding of Germany, although the same goes anywhere south of it as well. It's also the only place in the US to have had both catholic and protestand immigration during the time when it really meant something. So yeah, I'm feeling ever more content with my pick. -_- )

California like France??

For the weather of our Côte d'Azur maybe, but, euh, no.

California is THE place in the world were people create, and France is (don't you know that??) THE place which don't wanna move. Well, at least for general trends, of course there are conservatives in CA and people who wanna create and change in France.

I was wondering when you were going to reply. Interesting perspective.

Pennsylvania wouldn't have been my first choice, but I've voted for it just so California doesn't get it.

Though I suppose East Germany is kind of like Western Pennsylvania, and West Germany like Eastern Pennsylvania... lulz
