Vice President Richard Nixon defeats Senator Hubert Humphrey to suceed Dwight Eisenhower as 35th President of the United States. The Independent candidacy of Senator Talmadge of Georgia destroys whatever chance the Humphrey/Johnson ticket has of winning in 1960.
