Just to open the thread:

Today, there is a referendum in Greenland on an enlarged autonomy, with a notion of a "Greenlander people".

Are some of you specialists of this potential new country ?

The proposal seems to be about further devolution and increased responsibilitiy for their own economic well-being rather than independence.

It's not "about" independence, but it's widely seen as a step in that direction.

57 000 inhabitants (50 000 Inuits, 7 000 Dans)
39 000 voters

More or less, he size of Saint-Malo: Hashemite and others will understand.
But, Hashemite, it will be difficult to make a precise map !

Also, almost ten times Wasilla !
Maybe Sarah Palin could find a political renewal there in 2017 or later when Greenland may become independent...

The Democrats, an anti-independence (primarily Danish IIRC) liberal party has called to vote no. I believe they are the only ones to do.

Don't worry, I found a map template Grin

The U.S. should offer every citizen of Greenland $500,000 up front if they agree to join the United States!

Canada should offer to buy them up, creating the Greenland Territory. US Government is too busy throwing cash at banks anyways. It would eliminate the dispute over Hans Island.

We should have offered to get Iceland out of its bankruptcy and made it the Iceland Province, but Putin was quicker.

Results:

Yes 21 355 (75,54%)

No 6 663 (23,57%)

Invalid/blank 250 (0,89%)

Voters 28 268, on a potential total of 39 285 (tunrout 71,96%).

We've even got local results !
See http://www.valg.gl/Default.aspx

I'm not very fluent in Danish, but it seems as if, inside Nuuk (municipality, not town), Pituffik (a "settlement") has voted NO (sure, with only 38 votes...).

Good luck, Hashemite.

Why not putting together Alaska, Yukon, Canadian North East, Nunavut and Greenland (and Iceland ?), with Sarah Palin, aka Saraaq Puliinutuuq, as President of this Great North Confederation, which would of course need to have its own nuclear arms, facing Russian threats...

Sorry for this bad joke, as we're not in a "What if?" thread and as there may be some Inuits among Leip's forum members or guests who would not laugh at it...

Ja = yes
Nej = no
And ja Wink Pituffik voted no and as far as I can tell, it's Thule Air base (but I don't get why it's under Nuuk??)

They'll basically get the same deal as Faroe Islands, slowly taking over more and more responcibility for themself, but currently Greenland cannot survive without the 500mio $ Denmark hands over every year

Congratulations again to our Hashemite !

I think the 2 places for which you don't have data are the Greenland National Park, so there are only white bears, seals and "boeufs musqués".

I think polar bears and seals should be allowed to vote. Smiley

Nuuk municipality (not the district or whatever called Nuuk) voted yes about 62-38.
