Held today. It's the first nationwide Venezuelan election to be held since Chávez lost the plebiscite to become president-for-life. 22 governors, over 300 mayors, and over 200 state legislators will be elected today. In 2004, the opposition won only two gubernatorial races (Zulia and Nueva Esparta), garnering 39.6% of the vote nationwide, against 57.3% for the pro-Chávez parties. Pro-Chávez mayors currently rule 228 municipalities, with only 88 in the opposition's hands (18 are governed by independents).

Read about them a long time ago, but forgot that they were held today.

Any link to get results when they get in?

Would that refer to the Partido Socialista Unido de Venezuela, the Movimiento al Socialismo, La Causa Radical, or the Acción Democrática? All of them claim to be "socialist".

He's better than the alternative.

What alternative are you talking about? In 2006, Chávez's opponent, Manuel Rosales (whom Chávez has now accused of conspiring to assassinate him), was a social democrat. Chávez's opposition is composed largely of center-leftists, not radical right-wingers.

Apparently some precincts remain open. Chávez and the head of the National Electoral Council have called for "patience".

There was a significant delay on the referendum results as well, but then they turned out not to be in Chavez's favor... so who knows.

The opposition is alleging that Army personnel are keeping 450 precincts open despite the fact that they should have closed several hours ago.

Opposition won five Governor's offices (up from two last time), and among those were the two most populous states. They also got the Mayor's office in Caracas.

You know, for a dictator who allegedly fixes the elections, he does a pretty shitty job of it.

Or it makes clear exactly how bad he really did. Its pretty obvious he lost the referendum by more than 1% and rigged the margin  to save face.

Really, saying that of Chavez is like saying the same thing of Mugabe. Yeah, he loses elections, but that is not a sign that there was anything fair about them or that he would willingly leave if voted out.

And I am saying this as someone who was sympathetic to him until around 2004.

Actually, just to put things in perspective: though opposition won only in 5 states and the capital district, against 17 states for the chavistas over 55% of Venezuelans (more than 15.5 million of them) will now live under opposition governors.  Chavistas won in the jungle, opposition took the cities.

Here are the 5 largest Venezuelan states by population:

Capital District (Caracas): 5.249 mln. residents - opposition gain
Zulia (Maracaibo) - 3.620 mln. residents - opposition hold
Miranda: 2.828 mln. residents - oppozition gain
Carabobo 2.227 mln. residents - oppozition gain
Lara 1.795 mln. residents - chavista hod

I now will search the state capitals.

Actually, confusingly, most of Caracas is located in Miranda state.  Only the central Libertador municipality of 2 million people is located in the capital district.  And the Chavistas won the municipal government there, so I'm not sure whether to count it under its own Chavista government or the Caracas opposition government.

Actually, you are right. The mayor of Greater Caracas has a jurisdiction over 5 municipalities with their own local mayors. 4 of these are in Miranda (and all of which will be under the opposition control also locally). But the largest municipality, which constitutes the Capital District will have a chavista local mayor. Also, I don't know where I took the 5.249 mln. figure: the Metro Caracas under the new oppositioin mayor has about 3.2 mln. people, of which around 2 mln. live in the chavista-governed Libertador. So, my estimate of 55% was way off - still, the three largest states, as well as the Metro Caracas gov't are under the opposition control now.
