Presidential:

2000: Bush +28
2004: Bush +40
2008: McCain +65 (in other words a swing of R+25, and a trend of ca. R+34)

Senatorial:

2002: Landrieu +0.08
2008: Landrieu +3

It's likely that this parish has already been mentioned....but it's just simply embarrassing...if you ask me.

It's ethnic voting as much as it's racist voting. I don't think that Landrieu would do nearly so well there if she didn't have a French surname.

Whats funny is people saying Bobby Jindil would make a good presidential candidate. Hell he can't even keep his on state from becoming another civil war, much less doing anything for the rest of the country.

LA has been a disgrace to the rest of the country this year.

No, because it's obviously trending Republican due to race.

Is there any other conceivable reason for why Obama did so poorly there? Of course the whole cajun population trended this way but why?

Moral indignation at voting patterns is all well and good, but it gets very tiresome very quickly, especially when there's no context or real understanding of the area in question.

I'll now repeat this;

It's ethnic voting as much as it's racist voting. I don't think that Landrieu would do nearly so well there if she didn't have a French surname.

With some fun from the census... 35.2% of people here claimed either French or French Canadian ancestry. The only other large group is "American"... 17.7%. Only about 80% of people actually put down an ancestry; of those about 45% claimed French or French Canadian ancestry.

I can't find the percentage that's still Francophone (and it's a little late at night for it to be worth the bother) but it's definitely over 10%.

This is a good question. Seems Cajun folks have a strong rejection of Obama.

You would think Kerry would have done better considering his French ancestry Wink

How much would Louisiana have trended Republican if so many people (mostly black) hadn't left?  Probably not very much at all.  It probably would have been about the same as 2004.

Before Barack Obama, the only Democrats since 1964 to win at least one state in the South have been from the South, excluding Texas.

The de-blacking of New Orleans was vastly overstated. Many have returned, many just relocated to other parts of the state, and many whites left too.

I wouldn't call every white person in LA racist.  Theres most likely a reason for this other then just race.

I will admit it plays a factor.

Remember remember...

for a place to swing this wildly to the Republicans, it needs to have had some white Democrats in teh first place.

In other words, these people are (if anything. If we agree to use voting patterns as 100% correlated with racism. Which I don't. Although it's not nearly as objectionable as pretending that race is not somewhere at the base of white southern voting patterns) NOT AS RACIST AS MOST OTHER SOUTHERN WHITES. Cajuns only balked at voting for a black president - most white southerners already balked at the concept of voting for a president who got the votes of blacks.

Thank you for listening.

Unfortunately, since most Christians have no brains and are led around like zombies to everything their church says, it sticks.

Wow, the floodgates of Democrat trolls has really opened up here lately.

Along with his skin color, his name probably made many southerns uncomfortable

Cajuns being uncomfortable with other people's names sounds ... wrong. Grin

I was referring to the south as a whole, not Louisiana specifically. Everything is acting as if i'm the first person to every attribute racism to certain voters on this forum.

Yeah, I know. Still, this is a thread especially about the areas that swung away hard from the Dems... and especially the Cajun Country.

It's disgusting because it's trending Republican?

Its not trending Republican.

An area can trend Republican nationally and Democrat locally.

It's Louisiana -- a state where the two senate candidates (Democrat and Republican) were each accusing the other of being a "liberal Democrat."
