My dad has always voted libertarian, no exception, since 1984 when he could first vote. My mom was exclusive republican since 1992 when she could up until 2016 when she voted for Sanders as a write in. She said that in 2020, if the democrats nominate somebody like Booker, she would vote for them, if not she would stay home.

I voted for Johnson in 2016, although with hindsight I would vote Trump, not because I get like a giant hard on for his presidency, but because I am so tired of the wasted vote mentality and I would never vote for Hillary, so he would be my default choice on a repeat 2016 case.

In 2012, there was a mock election in my history eighth grade class. I was the only person in my class who voted for Romney. Needless to say I was the only out republican in my senior year of high school

What state are you from?

My parents are a very common types of voters that are underrepresented on Atlas: moderate (Republican) voters with a wide range of views who will pretty much always vote for whomever the Republicans nominate.

My grandparents on my dad's side owned an insurance company and have been straight ticket Republican their entire voting lives (~1956 and on?), to my knowledge.

My grandpa on my mom's side was a true swing voter who wasn't very political at all.  He would vote based on national mood and the candidate's personalities, not so much because he wasn't knowledgeable or anything but more because I don't think he trusted any politician and thought that was just as smart of a way of picking as a party label or specific policy stances.  My mom's mom was a very partisan Democrat (of the New Deal variety) up until Obama.  I think she has gotten noticeably more racist since then, and while her vote for McCain was almost certainly partly due to race, I honestly think she felt that Obama looked down on people like her (non-college educated, lives in Kewanee, IL, grew up in a very working class family, etc.).  I think she abstained in 2012, as "her vote doesn't even count in Illinois anyway."  She definitely supported Trump, but she calls him a moron quite a bit.  I think she will probably stay home in 2020.

My sister's first election she could vote in was 2014, and she voted straight ticket Republican in Iowa.  In 2016, she voted Republican for all downballot offices and for Clinton for President, this time in Indiana.

My family are white-working class, and they voted Democratic except for Reagan and Trump, the ones that survived or were born early enough too, anyhow.

Dad (this is interesting):
before 1984: Unknown, but I think he was pro-Nixon
1984: Reagan
1988: Unknown
1992: Perot
1996: Perot
2000: Gore
2004: Kerry
2008: No vote, hated both candidates but preferred McCain winning (Clinton in the primaries)
2012: No vote, hated both candidates but preferred Romney winning (Gingrich in the primaries)
2016: Trump

Mom (not very political):
Before 2000: Unknown
2000: Gore
2004: Kerry
2008: No vote
2012: No vote
2016: No vote

My dad's side of the family are German Texan southern Baptists (formerly Lutheran or Catholic) and have voted exclusively Republican since the 1930's. Not for ethnic reasons, but because they were wealthy. My dad is the only Independent. The only thing you can tell from the way he votes is that he votes against perceived candidates of elites... or he's a conservative who really hated the Bush family.

My mom's side of the family were from the SW Pennsylvania coal area, probably mostly of Scots-Irish descent, and have probably voted Democrat since FDR for civil liberties and active government. They were probably Republicans before then. Only one of my mother's 3 siblings voted for Trump.

1996: Dole
2000: Bush
2004: Bush
2008: McCain
2012: Romney (Santorum in primary, I think)
2016: Trump (Cruz in primary)

Dad:

1996: Dole
2000: Bush
2004: Bush
2008: McCain
2012: Romney (Santorum in Primary)
2016: Trump (Cruz in primary)

My Dad’s parents have been Republicans since the 70’s, (unusual for around here) though most of their siblings are or were until recently yellow dog dems.
In my part of Alabama there was an interesting dynamic where the older folks were much more democratic than the younger generations, but most of them have died off or switched allegiances now. My county was 87% Trump.

2016: Grandpa and possibly uncle voted for Trump. Everyone else Hillary I'm pretty sure.

Also, here is how I would summarize each of their views:

Dad- An odd mix of views.  He's overall pretty Trumpist, but he was a medical malpractice lawyer for a while so he would vote Democratic out of fear of tort reform.  He's generally pretty conservative, but is more liberal on stuff like guns.

Mom- A former small-government Republican who became disenchanted with conservatism in the early 2000s and has steadily grown more liberal.  She's a women's march style liberal at this point, as her social views have become more and more extreme.

Dad's Dad- He grew up in a poor coal-mining town in Northeast Pennsylvania but eventually became a very successful lawyer, so his politics reflect different backgrounds.  He's a Catholic ancestral Democrat, but very socially conservative, so he drifted more Republican.

Dad's Mom- Basically the same as her husband, but she seems to have become Republican a little earlier (probably due to not having the preoccupation with tort reform as much)

Mom's Dad- He was a small business owner and a staunch anti-tax Republican from exurban North Carolina who was active in a Baptist church.

Mom's Mom- I find her politics interesting because I don't know many like her.  She is extremely active in her Baptist church (albeit it is less fundamentalist than many Baptist churches) and is probably quite socially conservative on a personal level, but has been a loyal Democrat (including being pro-choice as a matter of policy).  She seems to have some level of discomfort with the far-left wing of the Democratic Party (i.e. she didn't understand why my mom wouldn't like a t-shirt with the American flag saying "if this offends you, I'll help you pack") and would say that she doesn't agree with homosexuality, but she is extremely anti-Trump and still a loyal Democrat.

Great-grandfather: Reagan and Colin Powell fan, non-voter (permanent resident). Catholic. Possible bisexual. Strongly believed in racial and gender equality.

Great-grandmother: Permanent resident. Mildly homophobic and sexist (against women) but liberal on racial issues. She didn't believe allegations against Michael Jackson and said either OJ didn't do it or he had cause.

Grandmother: Permanent resident. Prefers Trump to Biden but doesn't GAF about Trump. Anti-vax (including against the flu shot) but strongly pro-mask. She hates Biden with a passion. Mildly homophobic with some racist and sizeist tendencies. She is anti-welfare but received help in the past to my knowledge. Supports "Bono for President." Her favorite President was JFK. Catholic. Resistant to become a citizen or to get the vaccine although she suggested both were possibilities a while ago but that seems to have changed.

Dad: Sexist, mildly racist and homophobic. Believes depression/suicide is a matter of people just needing to toughen up. Non-voter. Thinks Bernie is OK. Hillary fan and loves Biden and hates Trump although he doesn't like Obama. He seemed to have opposed Roy Cooper before coming around to him. He peddles in conspiracy theories pretty often. I have elaborated on here before. He's also seemingly pro-choice and religiously ambivalent. He got two shots but no third yet. He believes that U.S. elections are broadly secure (anti-#StopTheSteal).

Mom: Voter since 2016. Non-voter before. Rabidly pro-trans and pro-LGBT. Less progressive on race/gender but still moderately so. Bernie-Bernie Democratic straight-ticket voter who typically favors progressives. Pro-life and pro-death penalty. Open to some conservative social rhetoric but seemingly unwilling to vote GOP except for unopposed offices. Mildly opposed to Trump. Reluctant Biden voter in 2020. Catholic who loves Pope Francis. She has received 4 COVID shots. Her favorite President is LBJ. 90% committed to Williamson in 2024.

Brother 1: Able to vote in 2024. Resistant to vote and doesn't have a significant interest to vote although I am urging both of my brothers to do so. To-be Democrat. He is pro-choice, anti-UBI, anti-PC culture. He likes Obama, seems to like Bernie, and likes Biden. Lincoln is his favorite President and he holds Obama in very high esteem. No opinion on Hillary to my knowledge. He asked me who I thought he should vote for next year and I said "Biden, probably" not as an endorsement but as what made more sense for him. He is Catholic but likes Buddhism as an idea and is open to the idea of reincarnation. I suspect he may convert later on. He has received 2 COVID shots. Says he would vote for Biden in a Biden/Williamson race.

Brother 2: Able to vote in '26. Democratic leaner with a strong conservative streak socially. Likes Bernie and said he would have voted for Trump & Tillis in '20 if he was eligible. Pro-life & Catholic. He has received 2 COVID shots. His favorite President is LBJ.

Uncle 1: Republican. Likely Trump supporter as he only registered in '16 (after the primaries) although he could vote in previous years. He only votes in presidential years in general elections (2016 & 2020 to date). Anti-vax and anti-mask.

Uncle 2: Non-voter. Previously said voting was a waste of time but has expressed interest in voting recently. Opposed Hillary and supported Bernie in the past. Catholic. He doesn't like Trump and seems significantly to the left of his brother and mother. He wears a mask regularly outside and used to glove up in public during COVID (DK if that ended). He has received 2 shots but is resistant to get any more.

For everyone else, I don't know. Many members of my dad's family, however, are mildly racist, colorist, homophobic, and sexist. It's not a slight but just true. Of course, I don't hold political views against anyone, especially family.

None vote for democratic or liberal parties and that's all you need to know.

My family are pretty staunch Democrats for the most part, particularly on my dad's side. My paternal grandparents were Eisenhower supporters but that's about the extent of it. My granddad voted for Nixon in 1960, apparently leading to some jokes from the rest of the family after Watergate about him being a "Nixon supporter." But I think regular Dem voters ever since. Though my dad has sometimes voted Republican in local elections when he personally knows the candidate, the highest office he can remember voting R for was for Governor in 1985, when he voted for Tom Kean. He has voted Dem for president in every election he's been old enough to vote in.

My mom's family is somewhat the same but I don't know their politics quite as well. My mom registered as an independent and recalled voting for Reagan in 1984, but basically was a reliably Democratic voter afterward. The last election before she died was 2012 and she voted for Obama. My maternal grandfather died decades ago. My maternal grandmother is a Democrat, although her politics are pretty centrist I think. My uncle on this side of the family is mostly a non-voter with some conservative leanings. But his wife and son (my aunt and cousin) are rank-and-file Democrats.

Mostly democrat but my Grandfather (from Rural Mississippi and generally thought politicans were insincere crooks) said that in 1960 he went with Nixon because he believed that a rich man shouldn't be President.
