Blasphemy?

(1/1)

HappyWarrior:
Is it blasphemy to call Jesus a bastard?  After all under the technical definition that is what he was.

John Dibble:
blas⋅phe⋅my
–noun, plural -mies.
1. impious utterance or action concerning God or sacred things.
2. Judaism. a. an act of cursing or reviling God.
b. pronunciation of the Tetragrammaton (YHVH) in the original, now forbidden manner instead of using a substitute pronunciation such as Adonai.
3. Theology. the crime of assuming to oneself the rights or qualities of God.
4. irreverent behavior toward anything held sacred, priceless, etc.: He uttered blasphemies against life itself.

I'd say that it would probably meet definitions 1, 2, and possibly 4.

HappyWarrior:
Except I am not using it as an insult, but simply by the literal definition:

1. a person born of unmarried parents; an illegitimate child.

Well, I'm not sure how the whole "bastard child" thing really works when you're impregnated by the almighty creator of the universe who holds dominion over all things, so that definition may not even apply depending on your interpretation of things.

Still, bastard even in the literal context has never exactly been a mark of pride if you get my drift. I think it would be better to use some sort of euphemism - let's go with Mary's little miracle. Pun intended. ;)
