In 1968

Liberal Republican Governor Nelson Rockefeller of New York defeats former Vice President Richard Nixon to win the Republican Presidential nomination.  Rockefeller picks fellow progressive Governor of Michigan George Romney for Vice President.

In a stunning upset, former Alabama Governor George Wallace defeats Vice President Hubert Humphrey to win the Democratic Presidential nomination.  Wallace picks former Kentucky Senator and Governor Benjamin "Happy" Chandler for Vice President.

How does this election turn out?

Nelson A. Rockefeller/George W. Romney (R): 445 EV
George C. Wallace/Albert B. Chandler (D): 93 EV

Governor Nelson Rockefeller of New York comfortably defeats former Governor George Wallace of Alabama in the Presidential Election of 1968 to become 37th President of the United States, succeeding President Lyndon B. Johnson as President. For the benefit of the doubt, I have given Governor Wallace sweeps the South and nowhere else, and Governor Rockefeller wins everywhere else. Governor Rockefeller also becomes the only Republican candidate to win the District of Columbia.
