This is completely fictional, and very hypothetical. I am letting my imagination run wild, so many things will be unrealistic, but the basis is what counts! XD
Oh and its kinda long! IM SO SORRY!

During the intense election between Kennedy and Nixon, the victor became unpredictable. The popularity of the candidates had began to flip-flop both ways. However, toward the end of the Election, Nixon's popularity had dropped immensely. Kennedy had become an icon of modern America, and people of diverse cultures all idolized him. America would soon elect a man that had inspired a brand new Generation of Americans. Or so we thought......

Just 2 days before Election Day, Sen. Kennedy had held one final rally. The rally was held at Shrine Auditorium in California. As soon as Kennedy stepped onto the podium, the audience screamed in excitement. As he spoke, he mesmorized them beyond comprehension. However, that mood would soon change. Unexpectedly, a fired bullet comes out directly toward Sen. Kennedy. Accidently in a bout with pure luck, Kennedy dodges the bullet, and it smoothly wounds the side of his face. He instantly falls off the podiumm, his head crashing directly into the wooden staircase. The audience and Staff had instantly ran to aid their Political hero, instantly dialing 911. By the time the Police and Ambulance arrived, the audience had become a riot. As the Police re-inforcements calmed down the crowd, the Police investigated the crime scene, and the Paramedics rushed Kennedy to the hospital. However, the case remained unsolved.

Kennedy was diagnosed with a Minor Contusion of the Skull, A minor bullet wound to the cheek bone, and 4 fractured fingers. When Kennedy regained consciousness, he immediately wanted to drop out of the race. Not because of his injuries, but because his pride and confidence had become shattered by that one event. Lyndon B. Johnson, decided not to run in regards to John's decision. However, mysteriously Johnson happened to have a massive heart-attack the following day, which lead to his death. Nixon had become President by default. He was later re-elected, and had led America into a bad financial crisis, which had stuck with him for the rest of life.

Kennedy became a recluse. Getting away from Politics, the Public, and Society in general. He was just a mere shadow of his former self. He lived off money he had made during and before his Presidential run.
He had gone into Therapy numerous times, and eventually had to live off Welfare. He had stayed home most of the time, and when he wasn't he was out walking through the woods.

Gerald Ford had been elected President after a huge boost in Popularity, promising he would be "America's Reformer". His presidancy went rather well, which lead to his re-election. During this time he had been labeled a true hero. Mysteriously and oddly, the 22nd Amendment had been slightly changed, so that Ford could run for a thrid term. Americans seemed baffled, but actually didn't mind. He had delivered all of his promises, and America had been greatly strengthened as a nation. However, it was his third term that would lead to the close destruction of the American foundation. Ford's third term had become horrid. Congress had been making/passing terrible decisions, Ford's proposals (which all sounded great on paper) had turned out to be destructive, and the Senate did not understand how they could fix them. America had landed into a deep recession, a financial crisis, a mortgage crisis, a growing string of people on welfare, and a new erupting war in Russia. In the upcoming election

John during this time had moved in with his brother Ted. John who had not been in the media in over 15 years, had been plotting something. The Press never dared mention John's name in vain, or at all. They had began to fear the Kennedy family, who had ferociously defended John and attacked any Statement made about him. However, John had gotten his own personal Psychiatrist, and had snapped out of many mental problems he was having. Ted who had been one of the last sensible members of the Senate, had been secretly and illegally distributing copies of as many bills/acts/proposals from the President, Senate, or Congress he got a hold of, to John. John had also been an active news watcher, and knew of all of the struggles Americans were facing. It was time to reveal his new plan. With the major sparks of encouragement and confidence from his family, friends, and close associates, he would run once again for President of the United States of America.

JFK slowly but effectively had came back to the public, with his announcement. His sudden return had seemed as though he had been a Ghost coming back from the dead. The people were all placed in shock, as well as the media. But once they heard his Presidential campaign announcement speech many had fallen in love with him once again. During the primaries, Kennedy had trounced Gov. Jerry Brown of California. Brown had tried attacking Kennedy on his sudden appearance to the public, accusing Kennedy of trying to create a Celebrity mystique for himself.  However, that tactic had just made Brown sink farther down in popularity, causing him to drop out. Cliff Finch and Lyndon LaRouche had followed Brown in the dropout slot. Jimmy Carter had proved to be JFK's match, challenging him by accusing him of being un-intact with American Society. Kennedy avoided attacking Carter, by viciously challenging him on each policy, making Carter look dumbfounded. Kennedy had soon clinched the Democratic Nomination, once again.

Ronald Reagan of the Republican party, had been proven himself worthy of the Presidancy. During the primaries he was attacked on lack of experience, aswell as his candidacy being nothing more than a Hollywood stunt. Reagan bounced back somehow on each blow, and had been going toe-to-toe with DIR. George H.W. Bush who had been his main adversary. Bush had been hanging in there, as he and Reagan's popularity bounced back and forth. Bush had finally been forced to drop out, making Reagan the nominee of the Republican party.

Reagan had chosen Sen. Bob Dole of Kansas, to become his running mate. Reagan admired Dole's foreign policy and War experience.

Kennedy had chose Fmr Gov. Jimmy Carter of Georgia to be his running mate. He had admired Carter's charisma and truly believed in his motivation.

Reagan would run his Campaign attacks based on Kennedy's absence, if he's in-touch with reality, his Mental Health, and his loyalty to keep true to America. Reagan would try to emphasize that he has what it takes to liberate America from its problems, Dole's war experience and that his loyalty would be forever true. His campaign would also bring up accusations about Kennedy's personal life for the past 20 years, supposedly retrieved from "Reliable" sources.

Kennedy would probably run his campaign, similarly to how Obama ran his. For the past 5 terms, Republicans had dug the U.S. deeper into a crisis. The U.S. doesn't need more of the same. He would try to represent his campaign as making a much needed Change, He would attack Reagan on lack of experience and his acting career, He would emphasize his ability to create a new America, and delivering America from the War and Crisis securely.

Now that I created a little "Story", we can get to the basis. Why did I write so much? I don't know, I couldn't control it! XDDDD
Its not even that good, but still, we'll base these little results on the main thesis.

Democratic
Fmr Sen. John F. Kennedy of Massachusetts
Fmr Gov. Jimmy Carter of Georgia

Republican
Fmr Gov. Ronald Reagan of California
Sen. Bob Dole of Kansas

Key Issues: Financial Crisis, Rising Drug Empire, Mortgage Crisis, Welfare, The Economy, and the War in Russia

Attempting a comeback after 20 years would be a failure.

The fact that Kennedy withdrew from society and became a recluse for many years, had undergone therapy several times, I assume mental therapy, and that he had lived off welfare for a time, in spite of the wealth of the Kennedy family, would bring Kennedy's mental capacity into question, dooming his attempted comeback.

This map is being generous to Kennedy given the unusual circumstances surrounding Kennedy's existence over the past 20 years in this scenario, and the fact he was running against one of the most charismatic figures in the history of Presidential politics.

Reagan/Dole                 342
Kennedy/Carter            196

Yeah this story was weird. IDK what motivated me to write it! LMAO!
But the general idea was just to pit Kennedy up against Reagan.
