What exactly WAS wrong with the ballots in Pima and Yavapai counties?

IIRC, the ballot design caused thousands of voters to vote for Nixon and Linda Jenness (Socialist Workers candidate) or McGovern and Linda Jenness. They voted for 2 people, but both votes were counted, thats why Jenness got nearly 5% statewide.

The same thing that happened in Palm Beach 2000, except without grossly partisan counting standards.

The same thing that happened in Palm Beach 2000, except without grossly partisan counting standards.

But apparently the ballots counted for TWO people.

Jenness petitioned as an independent candidate, except there was no procedure for independent presidential candidates, only independent elector candidates.  Those elector candidates were placed on a separate page that directed the voter to vote for 6 electors, while others were listed under a presidential candidate.
