When I was in kindergarten there was a stray dog that kept running by my family's house. There were a ton of stray animals in the area so this wasn't a surprise, but my mom was quite worried, and of course the dog kept scaring the sh!t out of me to the point where I refused to leave the house. So she called the local police and they said they'd send some animal control people over.

So two cops pulled up later wearing rubber gloves with a large plastic bag. One was carrying a shotgun. My my pointed toward the dog when it came by. The cop with the gun told her she might want to look away. Then there was a loud bang and the cops loaded up the dog's corpse into the rubber bag and said some people would come by later to deal with the bloodstain.

True story.

thanks for making me extremly sad. SadSadSad

Of course this was a place where people would buy mouthwash for the alcoholic content because they were too poor to buy alcoholic beverages (and hence you'd see the streets littered with empty mouthwash bottles), and were houses were literally never condemned because no one had the money to renovate/tear them down and if all the people living there were forced out there simply wouldn't be enough housing for the population and the homeless population would skyrocket.

My parents moved away from that place when I entered the third grade. They thought it wasn't the best place to raise a family.

Thought you'd like that place.

Hey, it had to be said.

I like both, but generally prefer cats as pets.  Nearly all cats are fairly easy to deal with, but some dogs can be very annoying (demanding of attention).

In reference to deadman's jest above, I have eaten dog in Vietnam, and I can report it is pretty good.  However it is more of a rare treat there - one wouldn't want to eat it every day as the taste is to rich and strong.  Seems it is eaten once in a blue moon on occasions when the male wishes to boost his sexual energies.

He didn't kill the individual dog he ate, it would have died for food whether he ate it or not.  On the other hand, because he did eat the dog, that means there is one less dog out there for food, so in a round-a-bout way, there is minus one dog out there.  (unless of course somebody else ordered the pooch and he just grabbed a bite of the other guy's plate just to try it, in which case he had no affect on the overall population of dog)

I love dogs, but they are no different than a cow, horse or pig.  I personally wouldn't eat one unless I was starving, but I don't think less of people for trying it.  Different strokes and all that.

(apologies to Eraserhead if I read to much into "disgusting")

Cats are objectively superior to most things.

I don't like cats particularly, but my family had one while I was growing up, so I can deal with them, mostly since they'll just leave you alone.
I despise dogs however.  I don't want to be jumped on, licked, etc. by a dog.  They're just so annoying and there's no way to make them go away.

It's called training and once they are trained you can get them to go away, or at least not be right on you, for the most part.

I like both of them, but love owning cats and would never want the hassle of owning a dog.

Come on now. Dogs are smarter than barnyard animals. That said, pigs are pretty smart. I gave up on bacon a while ago because it disturbs me to eat them too. Obviously, I wouldn't eat a horse either.

Cows however... I'd like to give up on eating them too, but that's a tough one.

I like cats, but dogs > cats. Actually, dogs > weasels > cats.

I like both, but I'd rather own a cat rather than a dog due to maintenance issues. But there are few pleasures greater in life than using a giant golden retriever as a pillow.

It's difficult for me to express my disgust at the idea that the so-called "Man's best friend" is better than one of the greatest animals in the world.

This discussion has improved my opinion of North Dakota and Vietnam.

I'm terrified of dogs, so cats win by default. I'm not really a pet person... I prefer to keep my fish.

Disagree...but only because I hate false choices.  I am a dog person AND a cat person.  I love them both.  Sadly, I have neither.  I have an eight year old...which is not unlike raising a monkey.

Dogs are great.  Fried, baked, in a soup, it's all good.  Cat only works in fried rice or if covered in some kind of strong sauce.

Mince-Kitten pie is great, though you have bludgeon them just right. I cover the kittens in waxed paper first before using the mallet; of course, their cute little insides would splatter over the kitchen counter if I didn't.

That's why you have a dog, to lick the cat guts off the walls.  Yet another reason dogs are better.  A dog can eat a lot more cat giblets than vice versa.
