It may have been asked at some point in the past...

But: Why did Goldwater do so well...much more so than in neighboring states?

Blacks couldn't vote yet, in practice. And Mississippi has hardly any upland whites or areas of traditional industry.

but blacks couldn't vote anywhere in the Deep South, could they?

and to the second point, is Mississippi so demographically different to Alabama or Arkansas?

I was just wondering if there was anything special in Mississippi...that made him far more popular there than in other parts of the South.

No (on the whole anyway) but that's the first thing that should be noted about '64 in any Southern state.

Mississippi is pretty flat, doesn't have productive coalfields or the sort of geography suited to the Southern textiles industry. It's all Deep South, except for the northeastern corner (where LBJ didn't do nearly so awfully, you note).

The state is/was even more racist than the surrounding states.

Hilarious how Georgia backed Northeastern Liberal Kennedy with 66% in 1960 and resoundingly votes against Southern Moderate Johnson in 1964.

The South is afflicted with profound racism.

It sort of depends on which part of the south, but yes, the polls show a lot of racist DINOs in AR, TN, and WV.

Actually, they didn't. The Georgia Democratic slate was technically uncommitted, just like parts of the Alabama slate. It's just that it had been handpicked by a popular Governor - who at some point between the electors' primary and the General Election became an enthusiastic and wholly committed Kennedy endorser.

Mississippi was in a state of massive political upheaval in 1963-5 (remember the MFDP?) Take a wedge issue, rev it up to full power, and then give the vote only to one of the two equal sides, and a result like that is what happens.

Which, IIRC, has the lowest black population in the state.

no need to deny the truth....especially in 1964.
