Clinton won PA in 1996 by more than his national margin.

What's the basis for determining that it belongs in the GOP column? Just curious.

How about a swing to a three-way tie in years with strong third party candidates (1992, 1980,  1968)?

I never realized Montana was so Democratic (relative to its surrounding states and its partisan lean nowadays at least).

Montana has always been the most Democratic state in the region because of the granola areas around Missoula and the mining base around Butte.

Cool. 1972 certainly was fun. How'd you figure 1968 and 1960?

That line of Republican support in '36 is fascinating.

I'm going to make a series of maps, mostly for my own enjoyment, of what elections would look like if the Republican and Democratic votes were swung to exactly equal.

How do you come up with this formula?

I would imagine if Dem won nationally 54-46, and Cal. went 52-48 Dem, he would subtract four from the Dem total and add add four to the GOP total, which would result in the nation being 50-50 and Cal. being 52-48 GOP.
