Do people really make that much of ado about little things?

Yes. Not because if the gaffe itself, but because it creates the impression that the candidate was pandering for votes by making a reference to something he didn't really know or care about. However, a one-off verbal miscue that can be attributed to a slip of the tongue ain't going to make that much of an ado, It would need to be a more extensive or blatant gaffe to create that impression.
