What is it with speeches being described as "home runs" and "grand slams" and "touchdowns" by these highly paid TV commentators?
I know we live in an age of sound bites and phrases that serve as a kind of emotional shorthand to convey our assessments of a given event, but why do they always have to apply sports terms to speeches?
Could you imagine Walter Cronkite back in the day repeating such inane phrases as "Out of the Park!"over and over? What about Eric Sevareid? Howard K. Smith? I don't think so. It's the McGlaughlin Group-ization of political discourse in America.
