If she supported Buchanan in 1996, she's a definite FF in my book.  Only candidate I would have supported over Perot that year.

The article is from 1999. Didn't Buchannan start out running for the GOP nomination (again) in 2000? I'm sure she ended up supporting Bush when Buchannan left the party. Again, this doesn't mean she suddenly stopped liking Buchannan.

Yes, Buchanan started off running again in 1999, but I think ended his campaign sometime late in the year.  Or it may have been 2000 when Bush/McCain looked inevitable.

Well, Buchanan certainly wasn't going to play well in Florida. The question is whether the specter of Buchanan actually becomes a salient feature of the election there.

That makes it worse, if possible. It means she supported the absolute looniest of the loony for the Republican nomination (well, not quite LaRouche level), but was too partisan to support him when he left the party.

The more and more we learn about Sarah Palin, the more we realize how much of a right-wing extremist she really is. She would be the most far-right president or vice president to ever hold office. She is an ideologue, she is scary, and she needs to be stopped.

I'm curious as to whether she was actually vetted to the degree the other candidates were. It seems like this was kinda spontaneous.

The butterfly ballot. This is well-established. A lot of people intending to vote for Gore voted for Buchanan by accident because Gore's name was above the bubble for Buchanan. It wasn't part of the argument that Bush "stole" the election since it was just voter confusion, but it definitely added to the whole idea that Gore "should have" won.

The fundies will back McCain in droves.

If he wins, and a few people bash some pans together behind him when he least suspects it then that woman becomes President.

Wow. Not only our first Woman Vice President, but our first Fascist Vice President. At this point, A McCain presidency pretty much assures a large, if not nuclear war. This choice he made today does not bode well for the American people.

On the one hand -- this is disappointing that any one would associate with Buchanan after 1992. That shows bad judgement.

On the other hand, how can the Democrats feign moral indignation when the head of their ticket played adopted son to a man who screamed God Damn America for twenty years?

I suppose when the issue comes up Palin had better disavow any connection to him after his visit to her suburb in 99.

He's a hack and that is his job so please stop discriminating against him. Tongue
But still her overwhelming opposition to abortion and support of creationism does raise a few questions doesn't it?

Yeah, Buchanan was running for the GOP nomination in 1999, but his campaign stalled after a poor showing in the Iowa straw poll, and he ultimately jumped over to the Reform Party in October 1999.  I assume that Palin didn't continue to back Buchanan when he jumped to the Reform Party, or it would have already come out and been a bigger story....but I don't know for sure.

Also, as a point of interest, Buchanan won the Alaska straw poll in 1996:

http://query.nytimes.com/gst/fullpage.html?res=990DE6DE1739F932A05752C0A960958260

As I understand it the straw poll was really the main contest that year, as the state convention awarded the delegates, and it was basically ignored.  Buchanan and Forbes were really the only candidates to campaign there, so they got first and second.

Serious question - How many of the delusional hacks here think that this will destroy McCain's chances/Palin's credibility?

It's so cute to see them think that they have something good on her so soon!

Meh. Didn't Bill Buckley support one of Buchanan's presidential runs, too?

Not as far as I know.  If he did, also gross.

Yes, but the point is Buckley later became an opponent of Buchanan as the latter's quasi-fascism became more and more known. On the surface, Buchanan sounds like a good small government conservative. Palin probably had a similar experience.
