How would the 1988 Presidential Election turn out, if these were the tickets nominated by the respective parties?

Republican
Senator Robert J. Dole of Kansas
Representative Jack F. Kemp of New York

Democratic
Fmr. Governor Jim B. Hunt of North Carolina
Senator William W. Bradley of New Jersey

How would this Dole/Hunt scenario turn out in 1988? Discuss with maps.

Wishful thinking, when Hunt couldn't even beat Helms there.

I'm not saying he couldn't win it, just that he wouldn't win that close an election because of it.

Likewise with Hunt managing to pick up Iowa in 1988. If anything Senator Dole would have won Iowa in 1988 due to the farming crisis, as the Senator from Kansas would have been seen by voters in the Midwest to better handle the farming crisis. Also, I doubt that Hunt would have won Michigan either.

A Dole/Kemp ticket is 1988 is a lot stronger than a Dole/Kemp ticket in 1996. I'll even go further to argue that it is better than a Bush/Quayle '88 ticket.

Dole: 346
Hunt: 192

Don't feel bad Jim Hunt fans...Hunt is elected in my 1996 alternative timeline! Tongue

two points:

1. bob dole cant holler 'n' the way helms  could.
2. ronald reagan had some mighty long coattails.

im kind of surprised hunt never ran for the us senate again.  he could have easily won in 98, 02 or 04.

I dont think they would have done anywhere near this well.  Hunt was just the kind of moderate Democrat that would have won in 1988.

No one could've defeated the great Jesse Helmes. 52% of North Carolina loved him. All he needed was that small majority.

I agree with the map.

Hunt was not a national player.

Hunt would have been a weak Presidential nominee, and Dole would have had a big win.
