Kind of an interesting question inspired from another thread. Some people seem to think the answer is no.

I say yes though. Another interesting question is who it would hurt more, a pro-life Republican o pro-choice Democrat.

Of course

People leave the Church/convert and people don't really care.

Given how in the vogue Catholic bashing is among the more anti-intellectualist wings of Christianity, I think leaving the Church would be a huge plus for someone running for president.

Yes, but it'd be harder depending on what they converted to.  And it'd be harder for a pro-life Rep.

I don't think it would matter much if there was a real reason for it...anymore there are thousands of Catholics that don't go to church that could be considered "ex"...as long as the candidate doesn't openly embrace beelzebub and have ritualistic sacrifices involving chicken blood and cool whip, I don't think it's a problem

It depends where he went. If he quietly had become a Protestant years earlier, I don't think it would be too big of a deal. An agnostic/atheist former Catholic would be wholly unelectable though.

#2 You could have put this in better places than here on this board... nice one asshole.

I think it would be actually harder for an ex-evangelical turned Catholic(e.g. Sam Brownback)

He turned Catholic?  When?

Oh, and I agree with you, btw.  Now I realize why my Baptist teacher didn't like him.

A few years ago. His former colleague (Santorum) helped him convert.

By the way, this thread was inspired by the discussion about whether or not Pawlenty would hurt McCain in the election because he left Catholicism.

It'd be alot easier in the Democratic party considering no one religous group has a HUGE amount of control in our party.  Plus if there were one or two the catholics would be right up there.
