CARL, what makes you think Obama, of all people, wants to be a strict border controller?

It's amazing how much the top 3 issues aren't big at all here.  Especially the water issue.  It just shows how little I understand the politics of the west.  Then again, while we can't find oil no matter how far we dig, we will have plenty of water Smiley

Never suggested he wants to control border.

However, he can't be any worse than McCain on that issue.

If you bothered to examine the main entry points for illegal entrants, the nexus would be clear.

Xahar,

Both you and snowguy really don't have a clue.

The colorado river division (in Arizona its called the CAP) have taken care of the water problem for the forseeable future.

Indeed, it's easy to see why less than 20% of people in either Utah or Wyoming list immigration as their most important issue. I'd like to see the figures adjusted to discount those two states.

So, in other words, they asked what's more important -- immigration or a number of issues that people tend to feel fairly dispassionate about -- and less than 1/3 answered immigration?  I don't think this is a huge surprise.

The four state region, based on census estimates, would be approximately 35%.

Interesting. At any rate, I find it interesting that Arizona has the highest percentage of people concerned about illegal immigration. Guess the Republicans still want action taken on the issue. Smiley

As a matter of fact, the legislature passed a law providing for stiff penalties for employer who hire illegal aliens.

It was passed overwhelmingly by the legislature and signed by the Governor.

I wonder how long it will be before Arizona becomes like Texas, where the Democrats are a complete non-factor due to not being strongly anti-immigration.

No one is that I know of here is "anti-immigration," but rather anti-illegal entrant.

Legal entrants are generally an asset (and tend to be rather strongly opposed to amnesty for those who entered this country illegally).

There are a lot of conservative Democrats in this state, including among elected officeholders.

"Anti-immigration" was a poor word choice on my part. That aside, Texas also has a lot of conservative Democrats, though they seem to have a hard time getting nominated to run for any offices they might actually be able to win.

Pit,

While the conservative Democrats in Arizona don't usually prevail in statewide primaries, they do very well in the legislative districts outside the major metropolitan areas, and in county offices in the major metropolitan areas.

Interesting. California probably could have ended up being a lot more competitive than it is now, except Governor Wilson (who I am a big fan of anyway) got Proposition 187 passed. Now nobody more conservative than Schwarzenegger can win statewide election in California. Sad

What's happening for the past decade plus in California is what has happended for the past forty years in New York.

The lefties have so dammaged the place that so many reasonable Californians have fled the people's republic.

Evil,

Think.

Liberal equals NOT reasonable (and not reasoning).

Let the liberals in California wallow in the mess they have made.

Productive citizens are fleeing the state.

In twenty to thirty years it will be recognized as the west coast version of New York.

Ah, but the Democrats in Arizona are strongly anti-immigration. At least the white and Native ones on the state level.

Verily,

Either you did not read or did not understand my clear response to PiT.

To repeat, I don't know anyone who opposes legal immigration, but most people I know, including legal immigrants (and naturalized citizens) strongly oppose illegal entrants.

This group includes Democrats, Republicans, Independents and all major racial and ethnic groups (indeed many of the members of the Minutemen are hispanic Americans).
