Ron Paul has gathered 4 times as much money from overseas military members than McCain and he dropped out months ago.  Obama has gotten 6 times as much as McCain.

I know why the military likes Ron Paul*, I just like pointing it out to McCain's fans.

I thought most of the troops support McCain.  At least, that's the prevailing wisdom.  What gives?

Perhaps the ones that support McCain do so grudgingly, thus are not willing to give him any money.  The ones supporting Obama (and previously Paul) are a little more passionate about their support, thus more likely to give money....even if they are fewer in number.

(although I'm pretty sure polls before Paul dropped out showed him beating McCain as far as the military is concerned.  The military is mostly conservative...obviously, and even the majority of those do tend to be southern WASP's, but there are a lot of libertarian leaning conservatives and Blue Dogish Democrats.)

Two of my military friends are voting for Obama.

I was actually surprised by how few forumers know people that are currently serving in the military.

You really only needs to look at primary results on military bases to know that McCain is going to do fine.  Grunts tend to be apathetic, but when they vote, they usually vote Republican.  It depends on the branch, though.  The Army is much less Republican than the Air Force and Navy.

And you get... those serving in Iraq who are politically active enough online that they care enough to give money to a campaign are also more likely to be Paul's core demographic of hardcore computer geeks who have nothing better to do.  Donations do not a representative sample make.

They only vote Republican because the Democrats turned their backs on the military a long time ago.

(....or at least that's how it's perceived in the military.  I understand that not all Democrats are anti-Military but generally, the anti-Military come from the left.  The last Democratic President really did hurt the military and many of us haven't forgotten.  The one before that was even worse and the one before that got us into Vietnam and then tied our hands behind our backs.  The last pro Military Democrat President was killed by a half nutty Commie..wait, is that redundant?  Most Democrats in Congress don't do us very many favors and some of them openly dislike us.  The Republicans suck of course too, but they haven't sucked as much for as long...yet.  Give them time.  Bush has set the bar pretty high for the next Pubbie in the White House.)

Well, there was that poll that stated that Army grunts are pretty democratic. You're probably right though. What the democrats need to do to make the Military more balanced is to pursue a policy of having a big stick and a soft voice so that they feel appreciated and not overworked.

But remember that a lot of peopl also give to the RNC.  I've given around $250 to the RNC but only $25 to McCain.

Ron Paul also beats McCain in the number of tin foil hats he's made in the past year.

I'm sorry I couldn't help it.

..and that's why I rarely openly supported Ron Paul.  Way to many nuts.  I wish the reasonable/skeptic's in the libertarian wing would take over and shut the 9-11 conspiritards down.  It's way to easy for people that fear us to use drive by posts like this to make others think we're all crazy.  Some of us don't believe in Big Foot, UFO's and JFK conspiracy's.

Wow, I just realized you have terrible grammar.  But that's off topic.  And now I forgot why I'm posting anything.

Oh yeah - JFK is not a conspiracy.  Oswald didn't shoot Kennedy (at least not alone) - it just doesn't make sense.  That's one "conspiracy" I'll stick to.

When dead0 says JFK conspiracies, I think he's referring to crackpot theories about the CIA having him offed & such. I personally believe it was probably a conspiracy between Oswald & Ruby. After all, as I recall, Ruby was never that big a fan of President Kennedy.

I still like Homer Simpson's explanation: "I think I've got it.  Oswald was trying to steal the Jack Ruby!"

I agree entirely with your synopsis of his supporters. I supported Paul mostly for economic reasons.

Also because Republicans told their libertarian wing to jump off a cliff and die.

Interestingly, someone supporting Paul took the effort to put together a lengthy DVD and mail it to RNC convention delegates. It was platitudinous for the first 20 minutes with a lot of Reagan quotes. Then it got into Paul's reason to be recognized with comparisons like his net fundraising and net profile. The video didn't know when to stop and kept rambling and rambling well past an hour. It felt like they were hoping for a spontaneous move to get him on as a speaker or such.

Right, because nobody in the DNC or GOP believes in Big Foot or grassy knoll's.  Didn't Jimmy Carter "see" a UFO?
