I'm just seeing this thread now although I have heard about this.

obviously these college presidents are just out for themselves as the 21-age makes their job a hell of a lot more difficult, but that doesn't make them wrong.  it's insane that now at age 17 I am supposedly responsible enough to live on my own but not old enough to make my own decisions regarding alcohol, tobacco, marijuana, etc.

this has no chance of passing, of course, and MADD is a collection of the worst people ever to exist.

However, the number of really irresponsible and destructive drinking incidents would go down.

The 1970s in NJ would like to have a word with you.

most if not all of the country was 18 in the 1970s

Well then whoever (I think it was bullmoose) mentioned that NJ moved from 21 to 18 and then back to 21 in the 1970s must have been incorrect.

MADD are just a bunch of awful neo-prohibitionists. They don't care about drunk driving, as evidenced by their opposition campaigns encouraging designated drivers, the argument being that it would encourage the people not driving to drink more.

There's nothing I can't say that hasn't already been said in this thread. However, if you think people are really that much more mature at 21 than they are at 18, then you're completely oblivious. There is no good (by good, I mean one that doesn't revolve around some sort of nanny state, authoritarian mentality) reason for an additional three years of adult hood before one can drink.

i certainly agree that madd is an awful group of individuals.  what makes them so terrible is the fact they are dishonest about their aims.  they are also loose with the facts.

they hide behind their name.  how could you possibly be opposed to mothers...or drunk drivers.

but it is also true that most youngsters blithely disregard the risks of alcohol.  it is only the smelly bums on the subway who have problems with alcohol.  but you are better than them and have better moral character.  it is only dumb blondes who drink too much at a frat party and end up exploited...or worse.  but obviously that would never happen to any of you.

hey im certainly not an anti-alcohol person.  i consume large quanities of it and generally enjoy it.  but im not going to totally ignore the dark side of alcohol.  unfortunately for me, ive been around the dark side of alcohol since the day i was born.

Despite my personal choice not to drink, I completely agree with this statement.  MADD can go to Hell.

For the record, I also believe MADD is too extreme and are simply anti alcohol.

I also don't have a problem with people who have a drink occasionally.  I just get extremely annoyed at people who get hammered all the time (and of course, most of them would never miss church), just because they think it's "cool."

Actually, alcohol has done something else bad: It's made me like rap. Sad Without it I'd never be caught dead yelling out "MOVE BITCH GET OUT THE WAY!" or "MONEY, CASH, MONEY, CASH, HOES!" but thanks to it I have done exactly that. Sad

What?

I put a source link down...it seems many of the 18 to 21 age changes came in the 1980s as a result of the federal highway bill...and not much else.

Minnesota's last census estimate of population: 5,167,101

Percentage of Minnesota that is black: 4.5%

That equals roughly 232,519 blacks. A lot more than 12.

Agreed. Prohibitionism is one thing, but doing it under the name they've given themselves is what the "family values" closeted gays do.
