We had proof of an alien civilization, we were contacted by an alien civilization, we were attacked by an alien civilization, but someone repelled the invaders...

Extreme conservitives would get into power and everyone would be required to serve in the military or at least have military training.

Assuming these are actually three different questions.....
We had proof of an alien civilization
Nothing much.  Both sides would be wanting to put more into NASA/whatever would be replacing NASA.

It would really depend on how threatening the contact seemed.  Everything would hinge on what the message was and how we interpreted it.

Same as the first....both parties would be wanting to put more money into space based technologies.

The biggest change would be a religious one.  Solid proof of aliens would lead many to question their religion.

Yeah. That's what I am thinking. How would that effect things?

Not much politically I wouldn't think.  Fundies might not be as Fundie as they were, but they will still probably be Republicans.  There might be a slight drift left from the far right, but not enough to greatly alter the political climate.  A lot would depend on how threatening or helpful the aliens appeared and how they showed themselves.  Was it just a series of messages from deep space?  Have they landed and given us the cure for AIDS and stupidity?  Have they come with guns-a-blazin'?

Pretty much what deadman said but I think the hippie flower type Socialists would get more popular too and move further to the left wanting contact. Now of course they would still be a small segment of society but it would grow.

For a different what if: if the civilization was much more advanced than ours, I think it would greatly help liberalism to see that we are not the center of the universe.
