The western boundary of New York wasn't defined yet. Charlotte county theoretically stretched to the Pacific.

It looks like it may have been a Dutch versus Yankee thing. I suspect Queens was still heavily Dutch then. Suffolk was settled by Connecticut Yankees. The upstream Hudson Valley was also probably still heavily Dutch.

To Torie it really isn't Dutch vs Yankee as much as it was Rural vs Urban or Farmers vs Merchant class. Really the Dutch vs Yankee divide is only a small factor.

I like the county map. I've been waiting to see one of these (with the big Queens County) for a while. Now if i could just find an old California map...

More importantly, there weren't many Dutch by this point. At least, even from the beginning, the Dutch colonies had very large Huguenot and English populations. Parts of Queens were probably still Dutch, but the rural areas upstate were all settled mostly by English settlers (at least outside of Albany and Troy).

Few if any English in New York upstream from Kingstown back then. Lots of Scots and Northern Irish, though.

This actually was a big part of the cultural divide. Scots and Northern Irish of course did not like an interfering federal government.
