Oh yes, because invading Russia with a massive army during the winter is sooooo successful...

Short answer, no.

Long answer, yeah sort of, but only if the rest of the world is willing to join us and only if Russia imposes their puppet government on Georgia. It's one thing for Russia to respond to Georgian attacks by seizing autonomous pro-Russian regions. It's another entirely for Russia to impose a non-legitimate government on Georgia (not that Saakashvilli's is legitimate o/c).

We should definitely help Georgia.

This doesn't mean invading Russia.

This doesn't mean fighting Russian forces in Abkhazia or South Ossetia.

This doesn't even mean fighting Russian forces within non-disputed regions of Georgia.

But something should be done to immediately force Russia's withdrawal from Georgia. What can realistically be done without starting a bigger war is up to NATO to figure out, but to let Russia pummel Georgia the way they are doing is just going to let them think they can go "liberate" Eastern Ukraine and bomb the rest of it whenever they feel. This really needs to be stopped before Russia gets the idea that they can do whatever they like outside of NATO.

Not the Georgian parts. But if push came to shove, I wouldn't go to war. We can't afford that.

We should not under any circumstances engage the Russians with our own forces, we should cart the Georgians home form Iraq if they want to get into it.

This will die down (hopefully) I don't want to discuss what would happen if Russia just decided to re conquer Georgia, but when it does die down, Georgia should be given membership into NATO, and built up with the latest and greatest.

Just like the other little guys surrounding Russia.

We should help Georgia, yes.  Limiting our help to good old fashioned diplomacy, of course.

You guys are acting like Russia is this big power country, It's not. Russia can't afford to piss us(USA) off. We can blow them off the face of the Earth if we really wanted to. The US have so many things that we don't even know of, and things we can only dream of. Come one guys think.

I have no problem with pissing off Russia, but you have to make sure China's on your side first (or is at least suspicious of Russia).  That's not happening right now and won't happen until Russia threatens Chinese interests (which always happens sooner or later)

This. We need to put our foot down & say that we will not stand for Russia bullying its neighbors.

We can take the boring route & impose economic sanctions, or we could be total assholes & fasttrack every one of their neighbors into NATO. Grin

Basically nothing, other than yell at them, and any economic acts need to have the EU on board. The US isn't in a position to do anything anyway, and Russia can hurt us a lot more (e.g., vis a vis Iran), than we can hurt them.

We would really be in the soup if Georgia were in NATO, because it would then reveal NATO as toothless. Countries should not be in NATO if we are not prepared to honor NATO commitments.

Yeah. Sad Chechnya is still giving Russia trouble, right? We could secretly (or openly if we're crazy enough) fund them. Grin

Well, that plays both ways. Would the Russians have attacked if Georgia were a member of NATO? Would it really be worth it on their part to call a potential bluff and hope they're correct?

It's amusing that some people think a war with Russia wouldn't involve the use of either sides nuclear arsenal.
