It's a shame I doubt any poll will ever be done on this sort of thing, but I have a strong suspicion it's Option 1.

I do vaguely recall some study though that said that almost half of former North Dakotans living in the metro lived in the Twin Cities proper, a far higher proportion than the metro at large...

I'm pretty sure the University of Minnesota (with 50,000 students) has everything to do with it.

I can tell you that the North Dakotans that live here during the summer are not more liberal than the yokal locals.

I'd guess option one, since it would explain why they left North Dakota. However, seeing as how I live across the country, that's little more than guesswork on my part. Sad

I'm going to guess most North Dakotans leave North Dakota because it's a really freaking boring state.

How could such a generalization be made?

North Dakota's economy is better than Minnesota's right now due to the commodities boom (oil and agriculture).

But oil and farming need fewer and fewer laborers each year as things are modernized.  This is never a bad thing.  (unless you're the unlucky schmuck to lose your job, but even that isn't always a bad thing)

Yeah, jobs being lost to mechanization is unfortunate, but it's a fact of any economy that dates back as far as the invention of the wheel.

Yet govts still bow to the ignorant and do things to protect specific industries.  It's one of my biggest problems with our govt, but it seems all modern govt's do it.
