9 dead, 10 hurt in 1-SUV rollover on SR 79 north of Tucson
Staff and Wire Reports

Three people injured when a sport utility vehicle packed with suspected illegal immigrants rolled over Thursday northwest of Tucson are at University Medical Center.

Two were in critical condition; a third was undergoing leg surgery, according to Darci Slaten, a UMC spokeswoman.

Nine people were killed, the Arizona Department of Public Safety reported.
The vehicle was carrying 19 people along state Route 79, about 15 miles southeast of Florence, said DPS spokesman Bart Graves.

The rollover took place at about 8:30 a.m.

The dead and injured had to be extricated from the vehicle by rescue crews.
DPS Lt. Mike Corbin said the Chevrolet Suburban was heading north just before 8 a.m. Thursday when it ran off the road.

It crossed a dry wash, slammed into a concrete abutment on the other side and flipped over.
The roof caved in when the SUV rolled.

The SUV's two women passengers died at the scene.

Officer Carmen Figueroa said authorities are still trying to determine who was driving the van.
"We have officers at the hospitals right now trying to find that out from the occupants in the vehicle," Figueroa said.

Accidents involving vehicles overloaded with migrants are fairly common in Arizona, and frequently lead to multiple fatalities.

Corbin said the roadway where this crash happened has recently seen greater migrant traffic, as human smugglers try to avoid Interstate 10.

The 19 people were crammed into a Suburban that had two bucket seats in front and three in the back, Corbin said.

"It's tough, it's tight, but this is typical of the smuggling organizations," Corbin said. "They're just product to them."

Also in the vehicle were numerous backpacks holding personal belongings.

Vinnie Picard, a spokesman for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, said immigration agents were investigating whether the SUV was being used to smuggle people. That suspicion was based on the large number of people crammed into the vehicle and because the highway where the accident occurred is a route used by immigrant smugglers. Still, it's not yet known whether illegal entrants were in the vehicle, Picard said.

Corbin said a witness who was driving in front of the crashed SUV reported that it was approaching him at a high rate of speed when it veered off the roadway.

You really should listen to an automotive enginerr.

He will tell you that vehicles a designed for a certain carrying capacity.

When that capacity is significantly exceeded, things like the suspension and handling of the vehicle are seriously impaired (as well as stablility).

As the article noted, vehicles containing illegal entrants are typically overloaded, increasing the risk of accidents.

I again note that it is interesting that lefties have no compassion for the deaths of illegal entrants and don't want to take the necessary steps to prevent such deaths (and the deaths of others on the roadway that they make kill/injure in an accident).

How about we just make it a lot easier for them to get in legally? There's a thought.

Well, go ahead and try to change the law, rather than break it.  There's a thought!

Oh, and BTW, many of those illegally entering the country could not pass the background check.

Or, perhaps you are also opposed to background checks.
