Richardson would sure do a good job of reemphasizing a certain aspect of his Chicago roots.

Why Senator Mikulski of Maryland Winfield? She'd bring nothing to Obama's ticket if Barack Obama was to select her. Absolutely nothing at all, except for the substitute teacher look, which Barack Obama needs to win over the substitute teacher vote Tongue.

An experienced female candidate strong on social policy.

Other than that, you are correct, she brings nothing to the ticket.

This is by far the most common picture out there of her:

In addition, Obama/Mikulski sounds awful.

I think that Clark or Richardson would make the most sense.
Bayh is way too conservative.

Actually, I agree with Richardson.  In terms of EV's, he's probably the second best choice.

Agreed! He'll deliver New Mexico, & um, that's it. Still, he'll guarantee Obama 5 EVs that he was probably going to win anyway!

Try NV and CO as well.  NV is unlikely now and CO is a tossup, as is NM.  My guess is that he brings 18 EV's to Obama.

Richardson is also good administratively and with foreign affairs,

I think J. J. may have surpassed Walter for overestimating the effect of the running mate now.

Why would people in Colorado and Nevada care about the Governor of New Mexico? (assuming they even know about the guy other than his "campaign")

He would effectively guarantee New Mexico.

Anyway, Colorado was estimated in 2006 to be 19.7% Hispanic by the U.S. Census Bureau. According to the CNN exit poll, voters there were 8% Hispanic. So 12% Hispanic would be a reasonable assumption. However, Colorado Hispanics went 68-30 for Kerry. How much more support do you expect Richardson to get from them for Obama?

A lot of the ones who don't vote probably can't vote. A lot of them probably won't realize that Richardson is Hispanic. White Coloradans could not care less if Obama chooses Richardson to be his running mate. Richardson simply cannot give a boost of more than about 1%, given how Democratic Colorado Hispanics already are.

Also, why would Nevada be any less than an even shot for Obama? Nevada was very narrowly better than the national average for Bush in 2004. McCain will probably do at least slightly worse among Hispanics. Not to mention that the state has been noticeably trending Democratic in recent years. In a 50/50 election, I figure Obama would probably win by 1.5-2%.

With all due respect, a black candidate running for President does not pick a Hispanic as a running mate.

This would simply be too much for many white voters.

Nevada has a habit of breaking Democrats' hearts.  Narrow losses in NV-02, NV-03, and the Governor's race last year, Kerry and Gore narrowly losing, etc.  I wouldn't dare put NV as red (our colors, of course) on my prediction map.

Lee Hamilton would be perfect for Obambi, if he already didn't have one foot in the grave.

But of the names being floated in the media, Bayh.

Former Governor and former Ambassador to Saudi Arabia Ray Mabus of Mississippi
As awesome as that would be, has anyone outside of this forum ever speculated on that?  I never even heard the Mississippi media speculate on it...

I had to do a few google searches but I found this recent gem after all of the Nostradamus stuff:
http://tpmcafe.talkingpointsmemo.com/talk/blogs/josephcast/

Recently, I have been thinking that Ray Mabus seems to fulfill many requirements I would want of a President, which I believe is the ultimate choice for a VP, after all.  He was an Ambassador to Saudi Arabia, governor of MS, is extremely popular, great on economic issues, and cleaned up the MS government as the State Auditor, as well.  Finally, he reminds me of Bill Clinton, which could help solidify the party.  Finally, a Southern VP just seems to make sense this year on many levels.

Also, TPM comments are getting excited for Mabus in a couple other VP threads.  I hope the buzz grows.

Also, Kos gives him a shoutout by including him in some bracket (he was one of the first to lose)
http://www.dailykos.com/story/2008/7/26/185023/333/863/557488

Newsvine gives some big pimps to Mabus and claims he will give legitimacy to Obama's Southern Strategy.  Besides that silliness, he points out Mabus's biographical advantages.  You can find that here:
http://raven2017.newsvine.com/_news/2008/06/11/1563496-why-must-i-always-have-to-play-second-fiddle-to-your-heart

You can listen to Mabus talk at the start of this Youtube video put out by the Obama campaign.  I think he looks aounds sounds pretty good on the change message:
