Internationally recognized anti-war activist Cindy Sheehan is running for Congress as an independent against Iraq War supporter, and Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi. I think this is the most interesting congressional race this election.

In order to get on the ballot in California as an independent, she has to collect a massive number of signatures from her district (over 10 thousand) by August 8. She already has over 3,000 more signatures than is required, but it is necessary to get much more than the minimum, because some always get thrown out for various reasons.

She has also been endorsed by Ralph Nader, Matt Gonzalez, Cynthia McKinney, the Green Party and the Peace & Freedom Party. Her campaign website also looks quite good: http://www.cindyforcongress.org/

And she's been admonished by the FEC for missing filing deadlines. Moving on...

I live in this district. I have never liked Pelosi in the past, but this is one election that I'm rooting for her in. She has done an admirable job standing up to the subversive wing of her party. Of course, she'll win as easily as she always has.

If I lived in San Fransisco, I'd vote Republican, so as to be hip and contrarian.

I remember reading an article somewhere about the Republicans celebrating their success in the 2003 Mayor's race because they won a whole 7% of the vote or so.

Both of these choices suck. Pelosi is in desperate need of a spine. Also, I shook Cindy Sheehan's hand last October. Heh.

Yes, in fact in that election the Green Party's candidate Matt Gonzalez (and now Nader's VP candidate), beat the Republican in the first round. He then won around 47% of the vote in the second round against Democrat Gavin Newsom. The Democratic Party was so scared of Gonzalez winning that they even brought in Bill Clinton to campaign for Newsom.

I'd never vote for a loon like Sheehan but I'm rooting for her to do as well as possible to embarrass Pelosi.

That's all the reason I need. Pelosi, even if it's more of a vote against the above mentioned losers than anything else.

Great news, Cindy Sheehan is now officially on the ballot for the 2008 election. Hopefully the Pelosi puppet will be defeated for her shameless collaboration with Bush.

I forgot about this topic. Maybe I'll get a Pelosi bumper sticker for my mother's car. It's crazy though, because in 2006, Pelosi was the sworn enemy. Now she's the reluctant ally. Amazing how much things can change in two years. Smiley

I actually like them both. In this district I’d probably not even bother to vote for the Republican, so, I would probably cast my vote for Cindy Sheehan, which would be more a gesture of support for alternative options on the ballot then anything else. I certainly don’t really mind Pelosi though, though I’m not of fond of her as I once was. But I’m a Republican, so that might be a good sign, ha.

Something of a misstatement, since local elections in California are nonpartisan. Otherwise, he wouldn't have done half as well.

Indeed. When the race occurred, no one I know was actually aware that Matt Gonzales was a Green.

I'm feeling too lazy to research at the moment.  Does anyone have the low-down of information on this race?  Is she running as a Green or a primary against Pelosi?  If so, when is the primary?  Polling information?

I want to go to sleep at night knowing that Sheehan will be crushed.  Although it would be hilarious for Pelosi to lose, I'd rather have that happen after I leave the area that she represents.

She's running as an independent.
