Wait... are you saying Stevens has a primary challenger?

Bad news for Begich.  This is going to be much harder as an open seat.

There seem actually to be several challengers, all of them total unknowns, Vicker being the only one among them to be spending money.

Yeah, unless there's some ugly-looking (or just ugly) facts about Vicker coming out before the primary, and unless Stevens is somehow able to shrug even this thing off (hey, it is Stevens in Alaska) we may have a new favorite in this race.

No Stevens is done. The GOP voters won't nominate a sure loser. Stevens may however drop out, and some "name" dropped in. I don't know if that can be done. Another alternative is someone running as an independent or third party.

File date's long gone, and the AKGOP was expecting to get behind Stevens.  He may get Murkowskied, but his name has a little more cache.  If the AKGOP can't get itself together and get behind a sane candidate, there may be confused vote-splitting and Stevens might squeak in under 40%.  Unlikely, though.

Stevens will tank in the polls, and he will drop out. You watch.

I thought Stevens was enormously popular in AK.

Surely a silly little indictment wouldn't cause much of a problem for Sen. Series of Tubes.

Well, Murkowski ran again with 20% approval ratings, and I'd bet that Stevens is just as arrogant as he.  Also probably better at weathering a gigantic scandal.  I'm inclined to think he'll get the beatdown, but Alaskans have a big blind spot when it comes to Uncle Ted.  He's family, y'know.

Damn, Ted Stevens is going to get primaried like Mike Gravel.  How come whenever a crazy SOB from Alaska runs for re-election, we don't get the joy of watching him lose in November?

While this has certainly improved Vickers chances, I don't see why Vickers would beat Begich.

Well, obviously I'm still rooting for Stevens in the Republican primary.

Vickers - puhleease!  He's not even a real Alaskan.  He just moved to Alaska full time this past January.  I don't think that will sit well with Alaskan voters.  I think Dave Cuddy has a much better shot.  According to Marc Hellenthal (an Anchorage pollster), Cuddy should be the odds on favorite to win the nomination (although to date he has run a lackluster campaign).
