...or so it would seem.  I hope the reporters have got it wrong...

>>>" Police say they found a letter in Adkisson’s car which said that he planned the attack, that he couldn’t find a job, and “stated his hatred for the liberal movement.” The church has been active in seeking equal rights for women, minorities and gays, and founded a local chapter of the ACLU."<<<

Yeah, I hope the reporters are wrong, too. Otherwise, it seems that we have terrorists in our back yard.

Not terrorists in the sense of any organized, anti-liberal movement.  But terrorists in the sense that there are those who would sow seeds of terror among those with whom they differ.  And I worry that some insane, lunatic liberal will attempt the same kind of horror aimed at conservatives.

A couple of years ago there was a mass murder in Seattle at a rave after party that  left six people dead.

The killer was some pyscho Montanan gun nut who talked about hippies destroying America in his suicide note.

Conservatives are definitely more likely to turn to terrorism... and if the Clinton years are any indication (OKC bombing for starters), domestic conservative terrorism will get a lot worse under President Obama than it has been recently.

Can one of the candidates make protecting us from dumb, pissed-off rednecks one of their main campaign issues?

Very sad. I hate to bring politics into this, but I’ve been looking at a few sites like Kjos Ministries that tend to be the usual suspects in triumphing shooting in churches as “rising intolerance for biblical values”  and I can’t seem to find this incident being mentioned at all. The pessimist in me tends to think this is because of what the church was teaching in the first place.

(I should mention that Berit Kjos seems like a very nice person, I’ve had a pleasant email conversation with her over her dislike of the Harry Potter series. But, she’s also unfortunately a bit nuts in my view, given that she had articles on her site letting the country know that hurricane Katrina was God’s judgment on a city of sin. I half expected an article letting us all know that this church brought the wrath of God unto themselves.)

Poor Biloxi...oh wait

What a sickening attack on the church. On any church. These people need their heads checked.

It's a Unitarian Universalist church. If we can't practice not knowing what to believe in, what can we practice?

That's right. The dirty gamblers got their comeuppance.

Let's just say I'm glad that I don't feel my congregation is in this sort of danger. This was an... upsetting... addition to our Sunday meeting.

well, if you want to find liberals, the first place you should go is a Unitarian church. It's a real shame too. The nicest people I ever met were at the various UU churches I've attended service at.

So true.  I am theologically pretty far from the UU folks, but I have worked with them on various projects for social justice and they are outstanding folks.

And yes, if someone wanted to track down liberals in a group -- that would be a logical place to target. It was clearly the gunman's intent.
