How would the 1964 Presidential Election turn out if these were the tickets:

Democratic:

President Lyndon B. Johnson of Texas
Senator Hubert Humphrey of Minnesota

Republican:

Senator Everett Dirksen of Illinois
Governor William Scranton of Pennsylvania

How would this Election turn out? Discuss with maps.

Neither candidate does well with the deep south. Without a conservative, the Goldwater states go for Unpledged Delegates. My guess would be either writing in Barry Goldwater, Strom Thurmond or George Wallace.

LBJ still wins however Dirksen manages to hold most of the solid Republican states like Northern New England and the Rocky Mountain states. Scranton wins Pennsylvania for Dirksen. Dirksen in the end loses for two reasons. One is his age, 67. Two is the fact that 1964 was simply a Democratic year.

I'm probably being too generous to Dirksen but who cares...

Lyndon B. Johnson/Hubert H. Humphrey (D): 331 EV
Everett M. Dirksen/William W. Scranton (R): 160 EV
Unpledged Electors: 47 EV

Although Senate Minority Leader Everett Dirksen performs better against President Lyndon B. Johnson than Senator Barry Goldwater did in 1964, President Johnson comfortably wins reelection over the 67 year old Senator from Illinois. Whilst the Republicans hold onto their strongholds in northern New England and in the Rocky Mountain states, no Republican candidate in 1964, even Everett Dirksen, was going to defeat Lyndon B. Johnson in 1964 and we know the reasons why. I can also forsee in this scenario the Deep South, which voted overwhelmingly for Barry Goldwater in 1964 for Unpledged Delegates in this 1964 Presidential Election.

Louisiana would have gone for Johnson, not an unpledged elector ballot.
