CA: Gov. Arnold Schwarenegger (R) (wins in 2012)

You still think he can beat Feinstein? He's not popular anymore, what with the budget fiasco, and Feinstein will (unfortunately) be a Senator as long as she wants.
I think he's got a good shot, and if Feinstein retires he's probably close to a shoo-in

I recognize the folly in predicting these things, since often candidates come out of nowhere, and in other cases it may be decades before either of the state's incumbents are gone, but:

AL - Troy King
AK - Mark Begich
AZ - Jeff Flake
AR - Bill Halter
CA - ?
CO - Mark Udall
CT - Richard Blumenthal
DE - Beau Biden
FL - Alex Sink
GA - Tom Price
HI - Linda Lingle
ID - Jim Risch
IL - Dan Hynes
IN - one of the Republican U.S. reps.
IA -
KS -
KY -
LA -
ME -
MD -
MA - Vicki Kennedy
MI -
MN -
MS - Ronnie Musgrove
MO - Jo Ann Emerson
MT -
NE - Mike Johanns
NV -
NH - Jeanne Shaheen
NJ -
NM - Tom Udall
NY -
NC -
ND -
OH -
OK -
OR - Jeff Merkley
PA -
RI -
SC -
SD -
TN -
TX - David Dewhurst
UT -
VT - Peter Welch
VA - Mark Warner
WA -
WV - Nick Rahall
WI -
WY -

I'll work on the rest later.

For New Jersey, I have a hunch it'll be Steve Rothman.

For Massachusetts, I'll go out on an unlikely limb and say Marty Meehan.

For Pennsylvania, I'll cross my fingers and hope it's Charlie Dent.   Smiley

Shoo-in? Of course not. He's been lucky every time so far. In 2003, Gray Davis was blamed for problems that weren't his, and Schwarzenegger was enough of a novelty to get elected. Then came the special election of 2005, an unmitigated disaster. He called the most expensive election in history unnecessarily and now he dares lecture us on how we need to cut spending. He's a total hypocrite, and the electorate will come around and realize it. He won only because of the way Angelides and Westly tore each other apart in 2006 (and you thought the primaries this year were bad). Now, with the budget fiasco, he's being shown for what he is. He'd rather kill important services than raise taxes, unlike the Legislature which represents the will of the voters. He would be a terrible legislator, and he won't run if he knows what's good for him.

Ugh...I'd prefer him over almost any of the likely Dem candidates but he's not ideal. I don't know how likely it is that he'll run statewide though.

Would Jim Gerlach consider a statewide run?

I used to joke that Gerlach would probably come to the conclusion that running in the 6th was so stressful that he would run statewide and be easily elected.  Smiley  I don't think he would but who knows. Again, not ideal ideologically but I really like Gerlach. I'm about 80% sure that I'd support him over Dent.

Wasn't he involved in a gay sex scandal? Or is that going away?

His wife's the only one who's gone away, so far.

Oops.  Hadn't heard about this whole story.  I'm guessing Alabama won't be any more forgiving.

Jo Ann Emerson is the GOP's obvious choice in Missouri, don't you think?

Two Jewish senators from NJ?  Benconstine would be pleased.  I still think that if 2012 is a strong GOP year, the GOP could pull it off.  And if Lautenberg retires in 2014, the GOP could pull that off.  I just don't see Rothman getting it after they passed on him in 2005.  If its a Dem rep it would most likely be Pallone or Andrews.

If Bond retires, she'd probably be the GOP's first pick for that seat. If she doesn't run, they can always ask Matt Blunt. Wink

She always struck me as a bit of a lightweight.

If she looked like Barbara Mikulski, would you say the same thing? On the basis of her body of work as a legislator, I'd say she's been very effective. IIRC, she was one of the legislators who balked at the Medicare expansion boondoggle.

It's a reaction to two things: her awkward self-aggrandizement in press releases (she talked a little too effusively about how people loved her where she was) and the trend among Congressional widows who then rise to their husband's seats. It's guilt by association with Mary Bono Mack, if anything. I admit that the first is just pique on my part.

Note that both Lois Capps and Doris Matsui can be included in that category.  And Niki Tsongas can probably also be included.

Indeed they can, and in the case of Capps and Tsongas, I had them in mind.
